Narrative
I CLOSED THE L COWL FLAP AND CUT OFF THE L MIXTURE. I HAD MY STUDENT PERFORM THE TROUBLESHOOT AND ENG SECURE CHKLIST. WITH THE ENG SECURE I THEN HAD MY STUDENT PERFORM THE AIR START CHKLIST. THE ENG DID NOT START ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT SO I VECTORED MY STUDENT IN THE DIRECTION OF ZZZ TO MINIMIZE OUR TIME FLYING ON 1 ENG IF WE COULDN'T START IT. WE WERE DOWN TO THE SINGLE ENG SVC CEILING BEFORE THE ENG STARTED. WHEN THE L ENG STARTED IT WAS PRODUCING NO THRUST. THE L TACHOMETER WAS INDICATING 1500 RPM'S. WE CALLED APCH AND ADVISED THEM OF OUR SIT AND REQUESTED A STRAIGHT-IN VISUAL APCH FOR RWY 32. WHILE FLYING TOWARDS ZZZ WE TRIED TO GET THE PROP TO MOVE FORWARD OR FEATHER BUT IT REMAINED AT 1500 RPM'S AND NO MANIPULATION OF THE THROTTLE WOULD YIELD ANY THRUST EITHER. STILL IN A DSCNT AT 1800 FT MSL; EVEN WHILE PITCHING FOR VXSE (82 KTS) I CHOSE TO MAKE AN OFF ARPT LNDG. WITH THE PROP NOT FEATHERING; I PUT ALL THE CTLS FORWARD ONE LAST TIME HOPING THAT THE PROP WOULD MOVE FORWARD AND THE L ENG WOULD PRODUCE THRUST. AS WE NEARED OUR SELECTED FIELD; IT WAS NOTICEABLY ROUGH AND ROLLING WITH ALFALFA GROWING MORE THAN 1 FT HIGH SO I CHOSE TO LAND WITH NO GEAR. AT APPROX 300 FT ABOVE TOUCHDOWN; I EXTENDED FLAPS 25 DEGS AND CLOSED THE THROTTLES ABOUT 50 FT ABOVE TOUCHDOWN. WE MADE A BELLY LNDG; TOUCHING DOWN JUST UNDER 70 KTS AND SLIDING 600 FT TO A COMPLETE STOP. WE THEN SECURED THE AIRPLANE AND EXITED.
