FLT CREW OF B737 ATTEMPT TO PARK AT JETWAY AT CLT WITHOUT BENEFIT OF REQUIRED GND MARSHALLER. STRIKE A VEHICLE PARKED BENEATH THE JETWAY AND DAMAGE ACFT.

Narrative

WE LANDED 2 HRS LATE ON FERRY FLT TO CLT. WHEN REACHING THE GATE; THERE WERE NO GND PERSONNEL TO PARK ACFT AND MOVE JETWAY. THE CAPT PULLED ACFT UP AND STOPPED TO WAIT FOR MARSHALLER TO ARRIVE. I CALLED OPS TO REQUEST JETWAY DRIVER AND ACFT MARSHALLER. AFTER 5 MINS AND 3 RADIO CALLS; JETWAY DRIVER SHOWS UP; BUT THERE WAS STILL NO GND PEOPLE TO MARSHALL ACFT TO STOPPING POINT. JETWAY DRIVER MOTIONS CAPT FORWARD; THEN SIGNALS A STOP WHILE SHAKING HIS HEAD. HE PULLS JETWAY TO ACFT AND THEN INFORMED US THAT THE L ENG COWLING HIT A GND VEHICLE CAUSING MINOR DAMAGE. AS WE APCHED GATE AREA; I; AS THE COPLT; CLRED THE R SIDE FOR ANY GND OBSTRUCTIONS. THE CAPT PULLED WITHIN 30N FT OF JETWAY. NEITHER THE CAPT NOR I SAW A MAINT TRUCK PARKED UNDER AND IN THE SHADOWS OF THE JETWAY ON THE CAPT'S SIDE OF ACFT. JETWAY DRIVER DID NOT CLR AREA UNDER JETWAY AND SHOULD NOT HAVE MOTIONED CAPT FORWARD. THE CAPT SHOULD NOT HAVE MOVED ACFT FORWARD UNTIL GND MARSHALLER CLRED L SIDE UNDER JETWAY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 619847: ON THIS DAY I WAS QUICK CALLED FOR A 3 LEG B757. THE SCHEDULER PUT A LOT OF PRESSURE ON ME TO BE AT THE ARPT WITHIN 1 HR; WITH ME BEING ABOUT 1 HR AWAY; THAT WOULD BE VERY HARD TO DO; BUT I DID MY BEST. I WAS RUSHED FROM THE START; AND AS DAY PROGRESSED WE FELL BEHIND BECAUSE OF MISFUELING AND STORMS. THE LAST LEG WAS A FERRY FLT FROM PHL TO CLT WITH 11 DEAD-HEADING CREW MEMBERS IN BACK. THE JETWAY OPERATOR GAVE A HAND SIGNAL TO MOVE FORWARD; INDICATING HE WOULD PARK US; WE ONLY NEEDED TO MOVE A FEW FT TO BE PARKED. THE TRUCK WAS PARKED UNDER AND IN THE SHADOW OF THE JETWAY; WITH THE LIGHT IN THE BACKGND I NEVER SAW THE TRUCK -- THE WHITE LINES ON THE GND STOPPED BEFORE THEY GOT TO THE TRUCK BECAUSE THEY WERE WORN OFF THE RAMP.
