Narrative
I LANDED AT KING SALMON AROUND XA:00 AND PARKED IN THE SE TRANSIENT PARKING AREA. AT AROUND XB:00; I STARTED THE ENG AND FINISHED MY AFTER START CHECKS. I LISTENED TO THE CURRENT ATIS AND CONTACTED GND. WEATHER WAS VFR; GOOD VISIBILITY; AND CALM WINDS. GND ASKED; WHICH RWY WE WOULD PREFER. I RESPONDED THAT WE WOULD LIKE RWY 18; AS WE WERE HEADED SOUTHBOUND. GND RESPONDED; 'TAXI TO RWY 18 VIA BRAVO.' I STARTED MOVING TOWARDS WHERE I THOUGHT I SHOULD GO TO INTERCEPT RWY 18. AT THIS POINT; I WAS LOOKING AT THE KING SALMON ARPT DIAGRAM IN THE FAA ALASKA TERMINAL PROC BOOK. I WAS CONFUSED BECAUSE THERE WERE NO TXWY LETTER IDENTIFIERS ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM. I COULDN'T FIND BRAVO. I GRABBED THE ALASKA SUPPLEMENT TO SEE IF THERE WAS TXWY MARKINGS INDICATED ON THE DIAGRAM IN THIS PUBLICATION. NO TXWY MARKINGS WERE ON THIS DIAGRAM; EITHER. THE OTHER POINT OF CONFUSION FOR ME WAS OPERATING AT A CTLED ARPT WITHOUT TXWYS TO THE END OF THE RWY. I WAS EXPECTING THAT TXWY BRAVO WOULD LEAD ME TO THE END OF RWY 18. MY (INCORRECT) UNDERSTANDING OF THE TAXI CLRNC WAS THAT I WAS CLRED TO THE VERY END OF RWY 18 AND WAS CLRED TO CROSS RWY 29. SO; AFTER MY SHORT TAXI UNDER MY CONFUSION OF TRYING TO LOCATE TXWY BRAVO; I ENDED UP TAXIING PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINES AND ONTO RWY 18. GND CTL QUICKLY CAUGHT THIS AND SAID; 'BONANZA XX; CONTACT TWR!' THERE WAS NO CONFLICTING TFC THAT I SAW OR WAS AWARE OF. I HAD THE TWR FREQ IN THE STANDBY POSITION AND QUICKLY SWITCHED. TWR ISSUED A TKOF CLRNC; 'BONANZA XX; CLRED FOR TKOF; RWY 18 OR 36.' I RESPONDED THAT I WOULD LIKE TO BACK TAXI TO RWY 36 (AS THIS WAS CLOSER). TWR RESPONDED WITH 'BONANZA XX; CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 36; FULL LENGTH AVAILABLE.' I BACK TAXIED AND DEPARTED RWY 36. MY CONFUSION HAPPENED DUE TO TWO FACTORS. FIRST; THE TXWY MARKINGS ARE MISSING ON THE KING SALMON ARPT DIAGRAM. WITH THIS INFO; I WOULD HAVE BEEN CLEAR NAVIGATING TO THE RWY. WITH THE PROPER INFO ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM; I WOULD HAVE HAD A BETTER LOOKOUT FOR THE HOLD SHORT LINES. SECOND; I HAD THE EXPECTATION THAT WITH THE CLRNC AND THE SECTION OF THE AIM; I WAS GOING TO TAXI TO THE END OF RWY 18; NOT AN INTERSECTION. IN THE BACK OF MY MIND; WHILE TAXIING; I KNEW I NEEDED TO (AND HAD A TAXI CLRNC) TO CROSS RWY 29. PERHAPS (ALTHOUGH I CAN'T BE SURE); I THOUGHT THAT THE HOLD SHORT LINES WERE FOR RWY 29; AS MY EXPECTATION WAS THAT TXWY BRAVO WOULD TAKE ME TO RWY 36. I WAS CAUGHT INATTENTIVE AND SHOULD HAVE NOT BEEN TAXIING WHILE UNSURE OF MY POSITION. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL MAKE SURE I KNOW WHERE I AM AND UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT THE CLRNC MEANS. IF I AM UNSURE; I WILL ASK FOR CLARIFICATION. TO PREVENT THIS FROM REOCCURRING TO OTHER PLTS IN THE FUTURE; I WOULD MAKE TWO SUGGESTIONS. FIRST; ADD THE TXWY MARKINGS TO THE KING SALMON ARPT DIAGRAM. SECOND; I BELIEVE THE CTLR TAXI PHRASEOLOGY WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH CLEARER WITH THE TAXI INSTRUCTION; 'TAXI TO RWY 18 INTERSECTION VIA BRAVO.' CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THAT HE WAS ON THE EAST RAMP AND TAXIED ON WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS TXWY B. THE RPTR WAS USING THE FAA/NOS ARPT DIAGRAM WHICH INDICATED NO TXWY LETTERS. HE ASSUMED THAT THE TURN ONTO RWY 36/18 WAS ACTUALLY TXWY B AND THAT IT WOULD TAKE HIM TO THE APCH END OF RWY 18. THE RPTR ADMITTED THAT HE WAS CONFUSED AS TO THE CTLRS INSTRUCTIONS. HE DIDN'T SEE THE HOLD LINE FOR RWY 18/36 UNTIL THE CTLR INFORMED HIM THAT HE WAS ACROSS IT. AT THIS POINT THE TWR SAID 'YOUR CLRED FOR TKOF; RWY YOUR CHOICE.' THE RPTR CHOSE RWY 36 BECAUSE IT WAS CLOSER. RPTR SUGGEST THAT CTLRS BE MORE SPECIFIC IN REGARDS TO THEIR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS.
