Synopsis

TB21 PLT LNDG RWY 25 AT SBA STARTS TO TURN ON INTERSECTING RWY 15 REQUIRING LNDG TFC RWY 15 TO GO AROUND.

Narrative

I LANDED AT SBA ON RWY 25. I WAS UNABLE TO EXIT THE RWY BEFORE THE INTXNS WITH RWYS 15R&L. AFTER I HAD PASSED THE LAST TXWY BEFORE THE INTXN WITH RWY 15L; AND AS I WAS REACHING THAT INTXN; THE TWR CALLED ME. I DON'T RECALL WHAT THE TWR CTLR SAID; BUT IT WAS URGENT; RELATED TO OTHER LNDG TFC; AND HE USED THE WORD 'INTXN.' I KNEW THAT THE TWR HAD CLRED ANOTHER ACFT TO LAND (I HAD BEEN SLIGHTLY SURPRISED THAT THE OTHER ACFT HAD BEEN GIVEN CLRNC TO LAND SO SOON AFTER ME); SO I KNEW THAT I HAD TO GET OUT OF THERE QUICKLY. I WASN'T SURE WHETHER THE OTHER ACFT WAS LNDG BEHIND ME ON RWY 25 OR TO MY R ON RWY 15L OR RWY 15R. (I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN; OF COURSE; BECAUSE I HAD HEARD THEM BEING GIVEN CLRNC TO LAND. HOWEVER; I HAD NOT REALIZED ITS SIGNIFICANCE NOR BOTHERED TO REMEMBER IT.) FEARING THAT THE TWR MIGHT BE WANTING TO HAVE THE OTHER ACFT LAND BEHIND ME; AND MISINTERPING THE INSTRUCTION FROM THE TWR; I STARTED TO TURN ONTO RWY 15 (I AM NOT SURE IF IT WAS L OR R). BEFORE I HAD TURNED MORE THAN ABOUT 20 DEGS; AND WHILE I WAS STILL ON RWY 25; I SAW THE OTHER ACFT ON SHORT FINAL FOR THE RWY I WAS ABOUT TO TURN ONTO; AND SIMULTANEOUSLY I HEARD THE TWR TELLING THAT ACFT TO GO AROUND. I THEN HEARD THE PLT ACKNOWLEDGE THIS REQUEST. AT THIS POINT; I CONTINUED TAXIING ON RWY 25 AND EXITED AT THE NEXT TXWY ON THE R. I REMAINED ON RWY 25 ALL THE TIME; AND ALTHOUGH I TURNED TOWARDS RWY 15; I DIDN'T ACTUALLY TURN ONTO IT (EXCEPT; OF COURSE; FOR THE PORTION THAT IS SHARED WITH RWY 25 IN THE INTXN). HAD THE OTHER ACFT CONTINUED TO LAND; I WOULD HAVE BEEN OUT OF THE INTXN BEFORE IT LANDED. HOWEVER; IT WAS SAFER FOR IT TO GO AROUND. FROM THIS I HAVE LEARNED: 1) LISTEN TO LNDG CLRNCS FOR OTHER ACFT AS WELL AS MY OWN; SO THAT I AM AWARE OF ANY POTENTIAL CONFLICTS THAT MIGHT ARISE. 2) LISTEN MORE CAREFULLY TO TWR XMISSIONS WHILE I AM IN THE LNDG ROLLOUT. 3) IF I DON'T UNDERSTAND A XMISSION FROM THE TWR; ASK FOR THEM TO REPEAT IT. I THINK I HEARD THE XMISSION; BUT DIDN'T UNDERSTAND IT. ALTHOUGH ASKING THEM TO REPEAT IT MIGHT NOT MAKE ME UNDERSTAND IT ANY BETTER; IT WOULD AT LEAST MAKE THE CTLR REALIZE I HADN'T GOTTEN HIS MESSAGE. KEEP MY TAXIING SPD UP WHILE ON THE RWY; SO AS TO EXIT ONTO A TXWY ASAP.
