Synopsis

A NEWLY INST RATED C172 PLT ON HIS FIRST SOLO IFR FLT CROSSES THE HOLD SHORT LINE AT RWY 27R AT YIP.

Narrative

THIS FLT WAS MY FIRST IFR FLT SINCE PASSING MY INST CHK RIDE; THEREFORE; MY FIRST IFR FLT AS PIC AND WITHOUT MY INSTRUCTOR. I CALLED GND CTL FROM MY HANGARS ON THE E RAMP FOR MY IFR CLRNC. GND CTL RESPONDED WITH MY TAXI CLRNC FIRST; THEN MY IFR CLRNC. SINCE I WAS EXPECTING TO HEAR AN IFR CLRNC; THE DETAILS OF THE TAXI CLRNC DIDN'T REALLY REGISTER. AFTER COPYING AND READING BACK MY IFR CLRNC; I ASKED GND CTL TO CONFIRM MY TAXI CLRNC TO RWY 23L; THE RWY MOST FREQUENTLY USED WHEN DEPARTING FROM THE E RAMP AND THE RWY I EXPECTED GIVEN THE WIND DIRECTION. GND RESPONDED THAT I WAS CLRED TO RWY 27R; NOT RWY 23L. I READ BACK RWY 27R AND BEGAN MY TAXI. I WAS PREOCCUPIED WITH THINKING ABOUT THE DETAILS OF FLYING THE DEP NOT CONCENTRATING SUFFICIENTLY ON TAXIING. I TAXIED THROUGH THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND ONTO RWY 27R. I RECOGNIZED MY MISTAKE ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. I TURNED AROUND; CALLED GND CTL AND CONFESSED MY MISTAKE; AND TAXIED BACK BEHIND THE HOLD SHORT LINE. SINCE RWY 27R WAS NOT IN USE FOR LNDG AND NO TFC WAS INBOUND TO IT; THERE WAS NO TFC CONFLICT. I BELIEVE THAT THE PRIMARY CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE MY PREOCCUPATION AND ANXIETY OVER MY FIRST IFR FLT AS PIC. ALSO; RWYS 9L/27R AND RWY 9R/27L ARE MOSTLY USED AS TXWYS TO REACH RWYS 5L/23R AND RWY 5R/23L; CONDITIONING ME TO THINK OF RWY 27R AS A TXWY WHEN THAT IS NOT THE CASE. IN MY LAPSE OF ATTN; I PROCEEDED ONTO RWY 27R OUT OF HABIT FORMED BY NUMEROUS DEPS FROM RWY 23L. AN ADDITIONAL MINOR CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THE SLIGHT INCREASE IN MY GENERAL LEVEL OF ANXIETY CAUSED BY GND CTL GIVING ME MY IFR AND TAXI CLRNCS IN A NONSTANDARD ORDER.
