AN MD83 FLT CREW EXPERIENCE AN AUTOPLT TRIM MALFUNCTION AFTER TKOF. THEY ALSO DISCOVER THAT THEY INADVERTENTLY TOOK OFF WITHOUT THE ACFT LOGBOOK.

Narrative

AFTER SEVERAL INTERRUPTIONS IN OUR BEFORE START CHKLIST BY AGENTS AND OTHERS WHO WERE CONCERNED ABOUT LATE PAX WHO WERE WAITING IN LONG SECURITY CHK IN LINES; WE FINALLY FINISHED OUR CHKLIST. WE WERE RUSHING TO MAKE THE DEP TIME AND FORGOT TO INSURE THAT THE ACFT LOGBOOK WAS ON BOARD. WE DEPARTED AND WHILE CLBING THROUGH 10000 FT I WAS AWARE OF A VERY SLOW AND HESITANT INCREASE IN AIRSPD AFTER COMMANDING A CHANGE FROM 250 KTS TO 320 KTS WHICH IS OUR NORMAL CLB SPD AFTER CLING THROUGH 10000 FT. AFTER CHKING ALL GAUGES AND SETTINGS; I REALIZED THAT THE AUTOPLT TRIM SYS WAS NOT WORKING. I THEN DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND FOUND THE ACFT TO BE FAR OUT OF TRIM WHICH SIMULTANEOUSLY WAS ACCOMPANIED BY AN OUT OF TRIM WARNING LIGHT. I RETRIMMED THE ACFT MANUALLY WITH THE PRIMARY TRIM SYS AND CONTINUED TO HAND FLY WITH NO PROBS. WE CHKED THE COMPANY QRH TO NO AVAIL. WE THEN LOOKED FOR POPPED CIRCUIT BREAKERS. WE FOUND ALL 3 SECONDARY TRIM (AUTOPLT TRIM) CIRCUIT BREAKERS WERE POPPED OUT. I THEN ASKED THE FO TO CHK THE LOGBOOK HISTORY WHILE I WAS HAND FLYING. WE THEN REALIZED TO MY SHOCK AND SURPRISE THAT THE LOGBOOK WAS NOT ON BOARD. I CALLED MAINT CTL DEPT; WHO INFORMED ME THAT MY ACFT HAD JUST HAD A PHASE CHK AND THE MAINT PERSONNEL FORGOT TO RESET THE BREAKERS BEFORE DISPATCHING THE ACFT. THE MAINT PERSONNEL ALSO DID NOT REPLACE THE LOGBOOK ON THE ACFT. I WAS ADVISED TO RESET THE 3 CIRCUIT BREAKERS. AFTER DOING SO ALL THE TRIM SYS WERE RESTORED TO NORMAL OP. I WAS ADVISED BY COMPANY OF THE SIT AND WAS ADVISED TO CONTINUE THE FLT AND UTILIZE THE SPARE LOGBOOK ON BOARD FOR RECORDING THE INFO REGARDING OUR FLT. WHEN I ARRIVED IN ACY I WAS MET BY MAINT PERSONNEL WHO ADVISED ME THAT THEY FAXED THE MAINT PROCS WHICH WERE PREVIOUSLY CONDUCTED AND WOULD ATTACH THEM TO MY LOG PAGES. I DISCLOSED THIS INCIDENT TO OUR COMPANY THROUGH OUR ASAP RPTING SVC. I ALSO RECOMMENDED THAT PERHAPS A NEW SYS OF 'RED FLAGGING' THE COCKPIT COULD BE DEVISED TO ALERT CREWS IF THE MAINT LOG HAS BEEN REMOVED; AND OR WORK IS IN PROGRESS.
