FLT CREW OF B737-300 EXPERIENCE HIGH EGT ON L ENG DURING TKOF. CONTINUE TKOF; DETERMINE THE PROB IS LIKELY A MALFUNCTIONING INDICATOR. RETURN AND LAND.

Narrative

TKOF WAS MADE ON RWY 1R WITH ATIS TEMP ABOUT 37 DEGS CELSIUS AND WIND ABOUT 040 DEGS/15 KTS. ACFT WT WAS 113900 LBS. NEAR V1 (FO) CALLED 'OVER-TEMP LIGHT #1.' I LOOKED DOWN AND SAW A HIGH EGT OF ABOUT 1150 DEGS CELSIUS. ABORTING DID ENTER MY MIND BUT I ELECTED TO CONTINUE AND DEAL WITH THE PROB IN THE AIR. NO VIBRATION; ASYMMETRICAL THRUST OR OTHER ABNORMALITIES WERE NOTED. I SLOWLY REDUCED PWR ON #1 ENG AND INITIALLY SAW NO CHANGE IN EGT. AT THIS POINT I THOUGHT WE WOULD BE DECLARING AN EMER; SHUTTING THE ENG DOWN AND RETURNING FOR A FLAP 15 DEG LNDG. JUST A FEW SECONDS LATER AS WE BROKE GND THE EGT JUMPED BACK TO NORMAL BELOW 900 DEGS CELSIUS (ABOUT 880) THEN BACK OVER 1100 DEGS CELSIUS; THEN BACK TO BELOW 900 DEGS CELSIUS. EGT INDICATIONS THEN FOLLOWED THRUST LEVER MOVEMENT AND ALL INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL. I CONCLUDED THAT WE HAD AN INDICATION PROB AT THAT POINT AND ELECTED TO NOT DO A PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUTDOWN. FO KEPT OUR FLT ATTENDANTS AND PAX WELL INFORMED AS WE MADE A NORMAL L DOWNWIND. FO CHKED OUR LNDG WT AND PERFORMANCE DATA FOR BOTH FLAP SETTINGS 30 AND 15. WE MADE AN UNEVENTFUL FLAP 30 DEG LNDG WITH NO BRAKE COOLING PROBS AT 112900 LBS LNDG WT. WE DID NOT DECLARE AN EMER.
