Narrative
DEPARTED DEC; IL; ABOUT XA40; HAD A GREAT TAILWIND; HAD GND SPD OF 160 KTS. ARRIVED AT 6I4; IN ABOUT 45 MINS. SKY WAS OVCST AT ABOUT 4500 FT MSL; MAKING IT A LITTLE DARKER THAN TIME WOULD INDICATE. ACTIVATED RWY LIGHTS ON 122.8. ONLY 1 ROW OF LIGHTS CAMP UP. NOT HAVING BEEN AT THIS ARPT AT THIS TIME OF DAY; I WAS NOT SURE OR COULD NOT REMEMBER; OTHER THAN LIGHTING WAS NOT STANDARD. I TOOK THE AIRPLANE FROM THE STUDENT; DUE TO HIS LOW TIME IN THIS PLANE AND NARROW SHORT RWY. FOR SOME REASON; I THOUGHT THE RWY LIGHTS MUST BE IN CTR OF RWY. THEY WERE NOT! I HIT A RWY EDGE LIGHT THAT WAS ON THE W SIDE (LNDG RWY 18). I ADDED PWR; SAW RWY; SLIPPED OVER AND LANDED. TAXIED IN; CHKED OUT PLANE. FOUND NOSEWHEEL FAIRING DAMAGED. NO OTHER DAMAGE WAS FOUND. I UNLOADED THE PLANE; WENT TO RESTROOM; THEN REMOVED FAIRING. I REMOVED TOP OF COWL. FIREWALL LOOKED OK; NO OTHER DAMAGE OBSERVED. I LOADED UP THE PLANE; PERFORMED A HIGH SPD TAXI -- NO VIBRATIONS OBSERVED. TAXIED TO RWY 18 AND TOOK OFF FOR DACATUR. CLEANED AIRPLANE AND RECHKED FOR DAMAGE. FOUND NO FURTHER DAMAGE. I AGAIN REVIEWED THE AFD FOR 6I4; WHICH STATED THAT 6I4 HAS NONSTANDARD LIGHTING AND THE NIGHT OPS ARE PROHIBITED! THIS I MISSED; I DID NOT REVIEW THE AFD; I USED PLT ORGANIZATION DIRECTORY; WHICH IS NOT OFFICIAL! IN HINDSIGHT; BIGGEST MISTAKE WAS NOT USING AN OFFICIAL AFD; AND I SHOULD HAVE REVIEWED IT AGAIN BEFORE EACH FLT! ALSO; I HEARD WHAT I WANTED WHEN STUDENT MENTIONED ONLY 1 ROW OF LIGHTS MEANS CTR RWY LIGHTS. I KNEW BETTER -- 'IF' I HAD JUST DID A LOW APCH AND CHKED IT OUT BECAUSE IT DID NOT LOOK RIGHT -- BUT THAT DID NOT REGISTER. I HEARD HIM SAY IT AND I AGREED WITH THAT. I AM THE INSTRUCTOR AND SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A MORE CAUTIOUS APCH. BUT HINDSIGHT IS GREAT. IN REALITY; THAT JUST DID NOT REGISTER.
