Synopsis

SPD AND POS DEV BY A DEP C550 FLT CREW WHEN ATTEMPTING TO REMAIN WITHIN THE 4 NM BOUNDARY OF MDW.

Narrative

DEPARTING MDW; I WAS PERFORMING MY FIRST TRIP AS A STANDARDS CAPT PERFORMING IOE ON A NEW CAPT. DEP WAS BRIEFED TO INCLUDE THE RESTRS OF NO TURNS BELOW 1300 FT AGL AND TURNS MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN 4 NM OF MDW USING THE ILS DME. NEW CAPT WAS PF. NORMAL DEP OFF RWY 31C WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO TURN R TO HDG 110 DEGS. AT 1300 FT AGL; OTHER PLT BEGAN THE TURN AND ABOVE 1500 FT AGL ENGAGED THE AUTOPLT. DISTANCE ON DME WAS APPROX 1.8 MI. I MOVED MY FOCUS TO OUTSIDE THE AIRPLANE TO CLR FOR TFC. WHEN I NEXT LOOKED BACK INSIDE THE COCKPIT; I REALIZED THAT THE OTHER PLT HAD ACCELERATED TO 250 KTS AND THUS PRODUCED AN EXCESSIVE TURN RADIUS FOR THE DEP. WE STILL HAD 30 DEGS OF TURN TO MAKE AND DME DISTANCE WAS NOW 3.8. THE AUTOPLT WAS STILL ENGAGED WITH 30 DEGS OF BANK. I VERBALIZED THAT THE OTHER PLT NEEDED TO DECREASE SPD IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN WITHIN THE DEP RESTRS. WE ROLLED OUT ON THE ASSIGNED HDG INDICATING 4.2 DME. DEP CTL REPRIMANDED US FOR EXCEEDING THE LIMITS OF THE DEP. I BELIEVE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE MY LACK OF EXPERIENCE FLYING IN THE R SEAT AS A STANDARDS CAPT. THE OTHER PLT WAS ALSO ACTING IN A NEW POS. WE DID BRIEF THE DEP RESTRS; BUT DID NOT EXPECT A 160 DEG TURN FROM THE TWR. WE EXPECTED A MUCH SMALLER TURN AND DID NOT EXPECT THE RESTR TO BE A PROB FOR OUR TYPE ACFT. I SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT THE EXCESSIVE AIRSPD EARLIER IN THE TURN; OR BRIEFED THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING A SLOWER AIRSPD DURING THE TURN.
