Synopsis

AN A319 ON TKOF ROLL REJECTED TKOF AT 60 KTS DUE TO MASTER CAUTION WITH MESSAGE 'COMPRESSOR VANE' FOLLOWED BY ECAM 'ENG 1 FAIL.'

Narrative

CONDITIONS AT TORONTO WERE OVCST WITH LIGHT SNOW; TEMP -5 DEGS C. ACFT HAD BEEN DEICED AND ALL ICING CONDITION SOP'S; INCLUDING PERIODIC ENG RUN-UPS; HAD BEEN ACCOMPLISHED. THERE WAS LITTLE; IF ANY; SNOWFALL AFTER LEAVING THE DEICE PAD. AFTER TKOF CLRNC WAS RECEIVED; THE ENGS WERE RUN UP TO APPROX 50% N1 AND STABILIZED AS PER SOP WITH ENG ANTI-ICE ON. ALL INDICATIONS SEEMED NORMAL. TKOF PWR WAS SET USING A FLEX TEMP AND THE THRUST LEVERS IN THE MCT DETENT. JUST AFTER THE 'MANUAL FLEX; SRS; RWY' CALLOUT; THE MASTER CAUTION ILLUMINATED AND I BELIEVE THE MESSAGE WAS 'COMPRESSOR VANE.' THE TKOF WAS ABORTED AT APPROX 60 KTS. AUTOBRAKING DID NOT TAKE PLACE. SUBSEQUENTLY; AN 'ENG 1 FAIL' ECAM MESSAGE APPEARED. THE ACFT WAS TAXIED CLR OF THE RWY AS THE FO PERFORMED THE ECAM PROC. PRIOR TO THE MASTER CAUTION LIGHT; THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS (UNUSUAL NOISE; YAW; ETC) OF A PROB WITH #1 ENG. MAINT WAS CONTACTED AND IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE ACFT REQUIRED FURTHER ATTN. WE RETURNED TO THE GATE. THE ACFT HAD PREVIOUS HISTORY OF 'COMPRESSOR VANE' MESSAGES. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE PROB WAS FOUND TO BE IN THE VARIABLE VANE SYS BUT THE ACTUAL COMPONENT REPLACED IN THE SYS WAS NOT GIVEN TO THE CREW.
