A B737-700 BEING TOWED TO THE HANGAR LINE STRUCK AN IMPROPERLY PARKED B737-200 INCURRING DAMAGE TO BOTH ACFT.

Synopsis

A B737-700 BEING TOWED TO THE HANGAR LINE STRUCK AN IMPROPERLY PARKED B737-200 INCURRING DAMAGE TO BOTH ACFT.

Narrative

ON JAN/WED/05 AT APPROX XA00; I WAS RIDING BRAKES ON ACFT X FROM GATE TO THE WASH RACK FOR AN HC1 WASH. WE WERE APCHING THE END OF THE HANGAR ON THE J-LINE. MR X WAS DRIVING THE TUB; STARTED THE TURN TOWARDS THE WASH RACK. WE KNEW FROM MANY PAST EXPERIENCES THAT IT IS VERY CLOSE QUARTERS WITH ANOTHER -700 ACFT PARKED IN FRONT OF THE HANGAR. MR X SWUNG THE TURN WIDE TO PROVIDE EXTRA CLRNC FOR THE WINGTIP-TO-WINGTIP PARKING ARRANGEMENT. AS WE WERE SLOWING DOWN APCHING THE PARKING SPOT; THE L WINGLET STRUCK THE R ELEVATOR AND HORIZ STABILIZER OF ACFT Y. WE STOPPED THE ACFT IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE IMPACT. WE FOUND THAT -200 ACFT WAS PARKED ON THE -300 PARKING LINE AND NOT THE -700 LINE. THIS IS DEFINITELY A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. IN THE PAST; WE HAVE MOVED ACFT TO THE WASH RACK WITHOUT INCIDENT WHEN THEY ARE PARKED IN THE CORRECT POS. WHEN WATCHING THE MOVEMENT INTO POS; THE ATTN IS FOCUSED ON THE WINGTIP-TO-WINGTIP CLRNC; NOT THE WINGLET-TO-HORIZ STABILIZER CLRNC. I WOULD NEVER HAVE THOUGHT THAT THOSE 2 AREAS COULD OR WOULD COLLIDE.
