Synopsis

A B747-400 RPTS AIRPLANE OPERATING WITH MANY CHRONIC MAINT ITEMS. INTERMITTENT FMC OP; OVERFLOWING LAVATORY CONTAMINATING GALLEYS.

Narrative

ACFT HAD A DEFERRED AFT CARGO FIRE LOOP INOP AND CHRONIC WRITE-UPS ABOUT BOTH FMC'S GOING 'TIME OUT' AND LOSING VNAV; LNAV AND AUTOTHROTTLE. WE ACCEPTED THE ACFT; TOOK OFF AND STARTED FOR ZZZ. FMC'S WENT 'TIME OUT' ON CLB; BUT CAME BACK WITHIN SECONDS; SO WE CONTINUED. ABOUT 5 HRS INTO THE FLT; GOT A CALL FROM THE PURSER WHO ADVISED THE UPPER DECK AFT LAVATORY WAS FLOODING AND NEEDED HELP. FO WENT BACK; FOUND THE VALVE AND SHUT OFF THE WATER; BUT THERE WAS AT LEAST INCH-DEEP RIVER OF WATER THAT WAS FLOWING BACK TO THE AFT GALLEY AND SOAKED THROUGH THE CEILING AND WAS DRIPPING ON GALLEY COUNTERS AND SOAKED THROUGH OVERHEAD BINS. POTABLE WATER HAD FLOWED THROUGH THE TOILET AND THE TOILET HAD OVERFLOWED; SO THERE WAS SOME CONTAMINATION OF THE WATER. THE UPPER DECK CARPET WAS SATURATED; AS WERE ALL ITEMS UNDERNEATH THE SEATS ON THE UPPER DECK; PLUS LUGGAGE IN THE OVERHEADS DOWN BELOW. AFTER A DISCUSSION WITH PURSER; WE AGREED THAT NO MORE MEAL SVC SHOULD OCCUR; DUE TO THE CONTAMINATION OF GALLEY SURFACES. AFTER ABOUT 30 MINS; PURSER CALLED AND ADVISED THAT ALL VIDEO MONITORS WERE INOP; PROBABLY DUE TO WATER DAMAGE. WE TALKED TO MAINT VIA SATCOM AND ADVISED; AND WROTE EVERYTHING UP. WE ALSO LOST THE FMC'S MOMENTARILY 2 MORE TIMES. WE LANDED IN ZZZ; PARKED AND TALKED TO MAINT AND WERE AMAZED TO LEARN THAT THE ACFT WAS GOING TO DENVER WITH PAX. WE FELT THAT THE FMC PROB SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED; THE GALLEYS DISINFECTED; AND THE CARPETS ON THE UPPER DECK DRIED; AT THE VERY LEAST. NOT TO MENTION THAT THE VIDEO MONITORS STILL DID NOT WORK; THE CARGO LOOP WAS STILL INOP; AND THE OVERHEAD BINS WERE SOAKING. THIS AIRPLANE NEEDED A LOT OF ATTN; AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN OTS!
