Narrative
I WAS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN FROM TRI TO ROA. APCHING ROA AT 9000 FT; I WAS GIVEN DSCNTS AND VECTORS FOR SEQUENCING. I WAS TURNED BACK TO THE APCH AND GIVEN A LATE TURN; OVERSHOT THE LDA COURSE. I WAS STILL DSNDING; USING SPD BRAKES AND LOWERING GEAR AT VLO BUT STILL TOO FAST FOR THE APCH DUE TO THE DSCNT. I REACHED DECISION HT AT THE RWY THRESHOLD BUT WAS STILL HIGH AND FAST AND WAS NOT ABLE TO LAND. THE VISIBILITY WAS GOOD AND ASKED THE TWR CTLR IF I COULD CIRCLE AND LAND ON RWY 33. HE SAID IT WAS NOT AUTH AND I STARTED THE MISSED APCH LATE IN THE SEQUENCE. THERE IS MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA OF THE ARPT AND I WAS DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO IT. I CONDUCTED A SECOND UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LANDED. MY PERFORMANCE OF THE FLT WAS SUBSTANDARD. I TRY TO COMPLY WITH ATC; BUT WHEN IT WAS IMPRACTICAL DUE TO DSCNTS WHICH ARE FAST IN A MOONEY AND VECTORS THAT ARE LATE TO INTERCEPT THE FINAL APCH COURSE WERE RECEIVED; I SHOULD HAVE ASKED TO START OVER AT THAT POINT. ANOTHER CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IS THE NEW CNX80 ON MY PANEL. ALTHOUGH MY SECOND NAV WAS SET TO THE LDA; I DID NOT SWITCH THE CNX80 TO LOC FROM GPS. THIS HAD NO EFFECT AS I BROKE OUT OVER THE RWY SO LATERAL GUIDANCE WAS NOT A PROB; BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN. THE COMPLICATED NEW AVIONICS ADDED TO THE WORKLOAD; BUT I BELIEVE THE MAJOR PROB WAS A LATE DSCNT RESULTING IN TOO HIGH A SPD AND VECTORS THAT REQUIRED EXTRA MANEUVERING. MY BIGGEST MISTAKE WAS A LATE AND POORLY EXECUTED MISSED APCH; FOR WHICH I WAS ILL-PREPARED DUE IN PART TO TRYING TO RESCUE AN ILL-ADVISED APCH. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL NOT OVER-COOPERATE WITH ATC IF THINGS AREN'T RIGHT; AND I WILL BE READY (AND WILLING) TO PERFORM THE MISSED APCH PERIOD; WITHOUT TRYING TO RESCUE A LNDG.
