AN MD88 NOSE GEAR HYD LEAK WAS CORRECTED WITH A TIGHTENED FITTING AND DISPATCHED WITH NO LOGBOOK ENTRY. CREW FAILED TO ORIGINATE LOGBOOK ITEM.

Narrative

ON MAY/WED/05 AT XA46; I RECEIVED A CALL FROM OPS HERE IN ZZZ1. THEY ADVISED ME THAT THE ACFT AT GATE X HAD A 'MECHANICAL' (SIGNIFYING A PROB EXISTED). I DROVE TO THE ACFT AND MET THE FO AT THE BASE OF THE JETWAY. HE TOLD ME THAT ONE OF THE HYD PUMPS WAS 'ACTING UP;' AND ALSO; THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE NOSE STRUT AREA. I LOOKED FOR AND FOUND THE LEAK WHICH WAS ON THE AFT SIDE OF THE NOSE STRUT ATTACH POINT; R-HAND SIDE. AFTER I TIGHTENED THE FITTING; AND WHILE ON THE HEADSET; I ASKED THE CAPT TO APPLY HYD PWR TO VERIFY THE LEAK WAS STOPPED. NO FURTHER LEAKAGE WAS NOTED. AT THIS POINT; I RETURNED TO MY OFFICE TO RETRIEVE MY CLIPBOARD; AND TO CALL MAINT CTL ON THE PHONE. THE MAINT CTLR (MR X) ASKED IF THERE WAS A LOGBOOK ENTRY; AND I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS HEADED BACK TO THE ACFT; BUT WHEN I LEFT MY OFFICE; I NOTED THE ACFT WAS PUSHING BACK. I TOLD MR X THIS AND HE SAID HE WOULD CONTACT THEM ON ACARS. THIS WOULD HAVE STOPPED THE ACFT SO THAT I COULD SIGN THE LOGBOOK BY PASSING IT OUT THE WINDOW. I THEN DROVE ON THE SVC ROAD TOWARD THE END OF THE RWY; THINKING THAT HE WOULD STOP; BUT HE TOOK OFF INSTEAD. MR X SAID HE PROBABLY DID NOT GET THE ACARS MESSAGE. MR X SAID THAT HE WOULD CALL ME BACK WITH AN UPDATE. AT XC45; MR X CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THAT THEY (ZZZ2 MAINT CTL) HAD CONTACTED THE CAPT; AND THAT THE CAPT WOULD INITIATE A LOGBOOK ENTRY. MR X THEN SAID THAT HE AND I WOULD DO A 'COMPUTER ENTRY' OF THE PROB. WE DID SO; AND HE THEN ASKED FOR MY FAX NUMBER SO HE COULD FAX THE RPT I AM FILLING OUT NOW. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT THIS PROB HAS OCCURRED TO ME. I THINK THIS PROB AROSE BY THE CAPT NOT WRITING UP THE LEAK IN THE FIRST PLACE. THE CAPT HAD A FULL PLANE LOAD OF PAX; AND I GUESS HE WAS IN A HURRY TO LEAVE. HAD HE WRITTEN IT UP; THEN HE WOULD HAVE HAD TO HAVE ME SIGN THE LOGBOOK.
