A PLT RPTS FLYING A RADIO CTLED MODEL AIRPLANE NEAR AN ARPT WITH A POLICE OFFICER SAYING THEY HAD CAUSED A CONFLICT WITH A MIL HELI.

Narrative

I AM A LCL 135 PLT BASED AT ZZZ; US. SEVERAL OF THE EMPLOYEES AND I ROUTINELY GO TO A LCL PARK THAT IS ABOUT 1-2 MI W OF THE AIRFIELD TO FLY RADIO CTLED ACFT. ON THIS PARTICULAR EVENING AROUND XA30; A MIL TWIN ROTOR HELI FLEW OVER AND A FELLOW EMPLOYEE WAS AIRBORNE FLYING HIS RADIO CTLED ACFT. MINE WAS ON THE GND AT THIS TIME. THE HELI FLEW DUE W AND CLBED OUT WELL ABOVE 400-500 FT AS IT PASSED N OF OUR FLYING FIELD BY APPROX 1/2 - 1 MI. WE THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT; AS ONLY 1 PLANE WAS AIRBORNE AND WAS WELL S OF HIS FLT PATH. ADDITIONALLY; THE HELI MADE NO EVASIVE MANEUVERS. WE SURMISED HE COULD NOT EVEN SEE US. AT AROUND XB00 A SHERIFF'S DEPUTY SHOWED UP AND ADVISED US A MIL HELI RPTED ALMOST BEING HIT BY A RADIO CTLED ACFT. HE DETAINED US (4 IN ALL) FOR ABOUT 1 HR THEN RELEASED US; ADVISING NO CHARGES WOULD BE FILED. ALSO NOTED BY THE OFFICER WAS THAT IT WAS A FEDERAL OFFENCE TO FLY RADIO CTLED ACFT NEAR AN ARPT; AND A VERY BAD IDEA IN GENERAL. BEING THAT ALL 4 OF US WERE PLTS; AND HAVING FLOWN AT OTHER ACTIVE ARPTS BEFORE; IT SEEMED A NON ISSUE; AS WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE RWY LAYOUT AND TKOF/APCH PATHS. THE ONLY CONCERN AT THE TIME WAS AVOIDING OVERFLT OF THE PLAYGND AREA AND FLYING QUIETLY. IN THE FUTURE; MORE THOUGHT WILL BE GIVEN TO SELECTING A FLYING FIELD AS WELL AS TOTAL AVOIDANCE OF ANY ACFT IN THE AREA -- MIL OR CIVILIAN. THE NEXT TIME I SO MUCH AS HEAR AN ACFT NEARBY; MY RADIO CTLED PLANE WILL BE ON THE GND IN A MATTER OF SECONDS.
