AN MD80 ON TAXI IN USED MORE THAN NORMAL PWR. GOT BRAKE OVERTEMP WARNING. STOPPED AND ASKED FOR TOW AND FIRE TRUCK. FIRE CHIEF ADVISED FIRE IN L GEAR. ACFT EVACED.

Narrative

AFTER A NORMAL LNDG AT ZZZ; (40 DEGS FLAPS; MEDIUM BRAKES DUE TO A SLIGHT TAILWIND) WE WERE TAXIING TO THE GATE. IT SEEMED TO TAKE MORE PWR THAN NORMAL; SO WE CHKED THE BRAKE TEMP. THEY WERE NORMAL; SO I CONTINUED TO TAXI. NEARING THE RAMP; THE BRAKE OVERTEMP LIGHT CAME ON AND I STOPPED THE ACFT. WE CALLED THE RAMP/OPS FOR A TOW AND ASKED THAT MAINT ALSO COME OUT AND ASKED TO HAVE A FIRE TRUCK STANDING BY AT THE ACFT. THE FLT ATTENDANTS WERE BRIEFED. A PA WAS MADE TO THE PEOPLE. AFTER MONITORING THE TIRE FOR SOME TIME; THE TOW CREW WAS GOING TO TOW US IN. WE WERE THEN TOLD THAT THE L WHEEL WAS ON FIRE. I HAD THE FLT ATTENDANTS EVAC THE PAX OUT THE TAIL. THE FLT ATTENDANTS DID A GREAT JOB AND THE FIRE CREW ASSISTED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SLIDE. I WAS TOLD THAT OTHER THAN A BRUISE; NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE FIRE CREW FOAMED THE WHEEL AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE CAUSE OF THE BRAKE MALFUNCTION WAS NOT RPTED BY MAINT. THERE WAS NO ANTI-SKID WARNING DURING LNDG AND ROLLOUT; AND ONLY MEDIUM BRAKING WAS USED ON LNDG.
