AN MD80 CAPT RPTS WRONG CIRCUIT BREAKER TRIPPED FOR DEFERRED ITEM. CAUSED BY MEL NOT GIVING SPECIFIC CIRCUIT BREAKER LOCATIONS TO PULL AND COLLAR.

Narrative

THIS IS NOT A CYA RPT; BUT TO POINT OUT THAT WHEN THE MEL DOES NOT GIVE SPECIFIC CIRCUIT BREAKER LOCATIONS TO TRIP AND COLLAR; THAT THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EASILY TRIP AND COLLAR THE WRONG CIRCUIT BREAKER! I WAS ON ACFT XXX THIS MORNING; FLT YYY; AND AFTER DOING THE LOGBOOK REVIEW AND READING THE MEL (WE HAD MEL 21-2A) I FOUND THE WRONG (M-22) CIRCUIT BREAKER TRIPPED AND COLLARED. I CALLED MAINT CTL AND ASKED WHAT CIRCUIT BREAKER WAS SUPPOSED TO BE TRIPPED AND COLLARED. THEY SAID U-26. HAD I NOT NOTICED THAT M-22 IS ON THE ICE PROTECTION L DC BUSS; I WOULD HAVE NEVER QUESTIONED THE CIRCUIT BREAKER BEING THE WRONG ONE TRIPPED. WHY YOU ASK? M-22 IS 'L SUPPLY AIR TEMP AND PRESSURE HIGH CAUTION.' U-26 IS 'L SUPPLY AIR TEMP HIGH CAUTION.' SEE WHERE AN ERROR CAN BE EASILY MADE BY LOOKING AT THE 'CIRCUIT BREAKER NAME'? I MADE AN ENTRY IN THE LOGBOOK SAYING THAT THE WRONG CIRCUIT BREAKER WAS TRIPPED PER PLT RPT AND CONTRACT MAINT TRIPPED AND COLLARED THE CORRECT CIRCUIT BREAKER AFTER CONSULTING WITH MAINT CTL AND RESET M-22 AND SIGNED OFF THE LOGBOOK. WE THEN DEPARTED 23 MINS LATE. I KNOW THAT THE VARIOUS CIRCUIT BREAKER PANELS VARY FROM ACFT CONFIGN TO ACFT CONFIGN; AND THE DIFFERENT PANELS PREVENT FROM LISTING THE SPECIFIC CIRCUIT BREAKER LOCATIONS IN THE MEL; BUT THIS IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THOSE GOTCHA'S.
