AN INST RATED BUT NON INST CURRENT C172 PLT FLIES AT VERY LOW ALT TO CONDUCT A FLT HOME IN IMC.

Narrative

A MAJOR LOW CTRED ON MY 100 NM FLT FROM 18I TO JVY. AWOS AND 1-800-WX-BRIEF RPTED 'SCATTERED' AT HEIGHTS THAT LED ME TO BELIEVE IT WAS MVFR; NOT IMC; BUT AFTER TKOF FROM 18I (MCCREARY COUNTY) IT WAS OBVIOUSLY IMC. IT SEEMED AS REASONABLE TO GO ON AS TO GO BACK. THE WX WAS SUPPOSED TO GET BETTER AHEAD (AND IT DID; 10 MI FROM MY DEST). MY TOTAL FLT TIME IN THE LAST 2 YRS WAS THE 3 HRS I'D PUT ON IN THE LAST 4 DAYS -- VFR DAY CURRENT; SORT OF -- OTHER; NO. I FLEW A RTE THAT KEPT ME CLR OF CLASS C AIRSPACE AND; AFTER GETTING OVER THE MOUNTAINS; DSNDED AS LOW AS CONSISTENT WITH THE SECTIONAL CLRNC MARKS. I ALSO MONITORED RADIO COMS FOR ACTIVITY (CTAF AND APCH FREQS). IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO SIMPLE TO 'POP UP' AND GET A CLRNC FROM LOUISVILLE APCH. STILL NOT LEGAL; BUT MUCH SAFER FOR EVERYONE. GET HOMEITIS; FATIGUE FROM A STRENUOUS WK; OLD AGE; MEMORIES OF HAVING DONE IT WELL IN THE PAST; STUPIDITY. IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS; WILL BE GETTING A BFR AND AN INST PROFICIENCY CHK RIDE TO RESTORE MY CURRENCY.
