Synopsis

A B737-200 RETURNED TO THE FIELD DUE TO UNABLE TO RETRACT THE LNDG GEAR. FOUND ;GEAR GND LOCK STILL INSTALLED.

Narrative

ON MAY/MON/05; ACFT X CAME IN WITH A PLT WRITE-UP ON THE NOSE GEAR MAKING NOISE WHEN TAXIING. THE NOSE GEAR WAS INSPECTED AND IT WAS DECIDED TO CHANGE THE STEERING COLLAR DUE TO BEING WORN. I WAS ASKED TO STAY OVER ON OVERTIME TO WORK ON REMOVING THE COLLAR WITH ANOTHER TECHNICIAN. THE ACFT WAS TAKEN TO THE HANGAR. WORKING WITH TASK CARD X; STEP #1 HAS YOU INSTALL THE GEAR GND LOCK; WHICH I DID AND THEN I SIGNED THE TASK CARD STEP #1. COMPANY POLICY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GPM HAS YOU MAKE A LOGBOOK ENTRY WHENEVER YOU INSTALL GEAR GND LOCKS. I WAS GOING TO DO THIS; BUT THE BOOK WAS NOT AT THE WORK SITE. I DECIDED I WOULD MAKE THE ENTRY LATER. AFTER REMOVING THE COLLAR; I TURNED OVER MY PART OF THE JOB TO ANOTHER TECHNICIAN WHO CAME IN EARLY TO TAKE OVER FOR ME. THE FOLLOWING MORNING WHEN I CAME TO WORK; I WAS INFORMED ACFT X MADE AN AIR TURN-BACK AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THE GND WAS STILL INSTALLED AND I HAD NOT MADE A LOG ENTRY. I ADMITTED I HAD FORGOT TO MAKE THE ENTRY. I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. I TALKED WITH THE SUPVR ABOUT THE INCIDENT. HE TOLD ME HE WAS GOING TO SUBMIT CHANGES TO THE TASK CARD TO THE PROB DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN. I HAD THOUGHT THE INCIDENT WAS TAKEN CARE OF UNTIL A COUPLE DAYS AGO WHEN I RECEIVED A CALL FROM MR X TELLING ME THE FAA WAS LOOKING INTO THE TURN-BACK. I HAVE SINCE PULLED UP THE TASK CARD AND THERE HAVE BEEN REVISIONS MADE TO IT ADDRESSING THE ABOVE MATTER.
