AA5 (F11) PLT BECOMES DISORIENTED DURING REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO FLY ILS RWY 18 IAP TO AYS. LOSS OF SEPARATION WITH ACFT HOLDING AT THE FAF OCCURS DURING MISSED APCH.

Narrative

I WAS #2 OF 3 FOR APCH. I WAS DISTR BY FACT THAT #1 HAD NOT RPTED ON GND AT AYS. ATC ASKED ME TO VERIFY #1 ON GND BY CALLING UNICOM. BY THE TIME I VERIFIED #1 ON GND; I WAS TOO CLOSE IN TO MAKE APCH. I RETURNED TO IAF BUT DID NOT GET SET UP PROPERLY FOR APCH. WAS CLRED FOR APCH BUT IT DID NOT GO WELL FROM BEGINNING. MEANWHILE; #3 WAS IN HOLD WAITING FOR ME TO LAND. MY #1 MISTAKE WAS EVEN TRYING TO MAKE THE APCH SINCE I NEVER WAS REALLY SET UP WELL. AS I COULD SEE THE APCH WAS A DISASTER; I DECLARED A MISSED APCH AND BEGAN TO CLB AND RETURN TO IAF. WHILE I WAS ABOVE THE CLOUD DECK; I CLBED ABOVE THE PUBLISHED MISSED APCH INSTRUCTIONS; THEREFORE; CONFLICTING WITH ACFT #3'S HOLD ALT. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO CLOSE CALL; I WAS CLRLY WRONG IN NOT FOLLOWING THE MISSED APCH ALT. THIS RESULTED IN ATC HAVING TO HAVE #3 CLB BACK TO 4000 FT WHILE I WENT BACK TO IAF AND ONCE AGAIN SHOT THE APCH. THE END RESULT WAS EVERYONE SAFELY LANDED BUT I SURE MESSED THINGS UP FOR A FEW MINS. IN LOOKING BACK; I SHOULD HAVE NOT EVEN TRIED THAT APCH SINCE I WAS NOT REALLY SET UP FOR IT AND I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE AWARE OF MISSED APCH ALT. I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BE DISTR AND EVERYTHING WENT DOWNHILL FROM THERE.
