Narrative

ON TKOF FROM RWY 27R; AS ACFT WAS APCHING V1; HEARD LOUD BANG AND FELT VIBRATION. CONTINUED TKOF AND SHORTLY AFTER GEAR RETRACTION; SMELLED BURNING RUBBER SMELL; THEN HAD FLT ATTENDANTS USE EMER CALL ON INTERPHONE NOTIFYING US THAT L ENG HAD FLAMES SHOOTING OUT FRONT OF ENG. AS I FLEW ACFT; HAD MY FO PERFORM ENG FIRE/SEVERE DAMAGE NON-NORMAL CHKLIST. AS SOON AS L ENG WAS SECURED; FUMES SUBSIDED. WHEN GEAR WAS EXTENDED FOR LNDG; GOT L MAIN GEAR UNSAFE INDICATION; SO DID LOW PASS ON RWY SO GEAR COULD BE OBSERVED FROM ACFT SITTING ON TXWY. WHEN I WAS TOLD GEAR APPEARED TO BE DOWN AND LOCKED; I CAME BACK AROUND AND MADE NORMAL SINGLE ENG LNDG ON RWY 27R. AFTER CFR INSPECTED ACFT; WAS TOWED BACK TO GATE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG INCURRED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE FROM INGESTING THE RECAP AND WAS REPLACED. THE L LNDG GEAR HYD LINES WERE BEAT UP BUT NO LOSS OF FLUID WAS NOTED. THE L TRAILING EDGE FLAP INBOARD SECTION HAD SEVERE SHEET METAL DAMAGE. THE TIRE THAT THREW THE TREAD REMAINED INFLATED. THE RPTR HAS NO INFO ON THE NUMBER OF RECAPS THAT WERE APPLIED TO THIS TIRE AND WHAT NUMBER RECAP FAILED.
