A B737-300 INCURRED FUSELAGE DAMAGE AND REPAIRED PER ENGINEERING AUTH. REPAIR UNDER SCRUTINY FOR THE PAINT AND SEALANT APPLICATION.
Narrative
I TOOK OVER ON A SHEET METAL REPAIR ON ACFT X. THE ACFT WAS DAMAGED BY A JETWAY AT B5.259.5 BUTT JOINT. THERE WAS A GOUGE FORWARD AND A DENT AFT OF THE BUTT JOINT. THE DAMAGE WAS CUT OUT PER ENGINEERING AUTH. I WAS INVOLVED IN THE INSTALLATION OF THE DOUBLER; SEALANT; PAINT AND CLOSE-UP. I HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED BY THE FAA; BUT I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY THE COMPANY THAT THE REPAIR HAS COME UNDER SCRUTINY. I CANNOT VERIFY ANY OF THE FOLLOWING INFO. THE INITIAL COMPLAINT FOCUSED ON THE PAINT AND SEALANT. THE ACFT WAS IN ON 2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS AND FROM WHAT I'M TOLD THE PAINT AND SEALANT WAS STRIPPED (TWICE) WITH CHISEL GASKET REMOVER. I'M TOLD THAT FASTENERS WERE REMOVED TO INJECT SEALANT INTO THE FICTITIOUS AREA BTWN THE NON EXISTENT DAMAGED SKIN AND THE DOUBLER (DAMAGED AREA WAS CUT OUT). I'M ALSO TOLD THAT FASTENERS WERE REMOVED TO INJECT SEALANT UNDER THE FORWARD UPPER CORNER OF THE DOUBLER WHICH APPEARED TO BE MISSING SEALANT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT EFFECT CHISEL GASKET REMOVER (WHICH WAS USED TWICE TO REMOVE THE PAINT) HAD ON THE SEALANT THAT I APPLIED TO THE REPAIR. I DON'T KNOW IF THE PAINT WAS DRY WHEN IT LEFT AND WHAT EFFECT THAT HAD ON THE APPEARANCE OF THE PAINT. WHAT I DO KNOW IS THAT THE PICTURES DO NOT REFLECT THE APPEARANCE OF THE REPAIR WHEN I SIGNED IT OFF. (NOTE THE TAPE LINE WHERE THE PAINT WAS REMOVED.) WHEN I ATTENDED TRAINING; I DISTINCTLY RECALL SOMEONE TELLING ME 'DO NOT FILE A RPT IF YOU DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG.' WELL; I AM NOT SURE WHAT I'VE DONE WRONG; BUT I AM FILING THIS RPT ON THE ADVICE OF THE COMPANY.
