AN MD80 JTD8D-219 ENG WAS FOUND WITH THE FAN BEARING COVER CRACKED. REPLACED COVER WITH ROBBED UNIT. LATER FOUND INCORRECT PART INSTALLED.

Narrative

ON OCT/FRI/05; I WAS ASKED BY MY LEAD TECHNICIAN AT ZZZ1 TO GO TO ZZZ2 TO WORK ACFT X WHICH WAS OTS DUE TO A L ENG EPR PROB. WHILE TROUBLESHOOTING THE EPR PROB; IT WAS NOTED THAT THE FRONT ACCESSORY DRIVE COVER ON THE L ENG HAD SEVERAL CRACKS AND WAS LEAKING OIL EXTERNALLY. THE 2 MECHS ACCOMPANYING ME CONFIRMED THE FINDINGS AND WE CONCLUDED THAT THE FRONT ACCESSORY COVER MUST BE REPLACED BEFORE THE ACFT COULD BE RETURNED TO SVC. OUR NEXT ACTION WAS TO CONTACT A LEAD TECHNICIAN AT ZZZ1 TO HAVE THE PARTS; EQUIP; AND PAPERWORK NEEDED TO FACILITATE THE FORWARD ACCESSORY DRIVE COVER REPLACEMENT. THE PART NUMBER; SERIAL NUMBER; AND THE PART NUMBER OF THE COVER INSTALLED ON THE ENG WAS PROVIDED BY PHONE TO THE LEAD TECHNICIAN ON DUTY AT ZZZ1. WE WERE INFORMED THAT THE PARTS; EQUIP; AND PAPERWORK NEEDED FOR THE COVER REPLACEMENT WOULD BE SENT TO US BY GND TO ZZZ2 FROM ZZZ1. WHEN WE RECEIVED THE REPLACEMENT COVER; THE PART NUMBER OF THE COVER APPEARED TO BE CORRECT. UPON VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE COVER BEFORE INSTALLATION; THE COVER APPEARED TO BE THE SAME AS THE COVER REMOVED. THE COVER WAS INSTALLED PER THE MAINT MANUAL REF THAT WE HAD ON HAND. ON OCT/WED/05 IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTN THAT WE MAY HAVE INSTALLED AN INCORRECT FRONT ACCESSORY DRIVE COVER ON THE L ENG OF ACFT X. IT IS NOW MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THERE ARE 2 DIFFERENT COVERS THAT CAN BE INSTALLED ON THE ENG. WHEN WE REVIEWED THE IPC 72-21-00 AT THE TIME WHEN THE COVER WAS INSTALLED; IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A PRE SVC BULLETIN XXX OF POST SVC BULLETIN YYY ALLOWED FOR THE COVER WE RECEIVED TO BE INSTALLED. IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTN THAT THIS IS NOT THE CASE. WE MAY HAVE INSTALLED A COVER (PART #XXX) WHEN POSSIBLY A COVER ASSEMBLY (PART #YYY) SHOULD HAVE BEEN INSTALLED. TECHNICIAN SVCS WAS CONTACTED TO ISSUE A DEFERRAL TO DETERMINE THE PART NUMBER OF THE FORWARD ACCESSORY DRIVE COVER ON THE L ENG ON ACFT X AND TAKE CORRECTIVE ACTION AS REQUIRED.
