Narrative
WE WERE CLRED ON AN IFR CLRNC TO DEPART RWY 31L AT JFK. WE WERE CLRED ON THE KENNEDY 9 DEP WITH THE CANARSIE CLB. WE ENTERED THE DEP RWY AND SID PROC PLUS THE CRI CLB INTO THE COLLINS PRO-LINE 21 FMS SYSTEM IN THE ACFT. AFTER DEP I ACTIVATED THE AUTOPLT IN FMS CAPTURE MODE. THE ACFT PROCEEDED TO CLB IN THE SID DEP DIRECT CRI. WHEN WE ARRIVED AT CRI THE FMS INDICATED A R TURN TO INTERCEPT THE 176 DEG RADIAL OF CRI -- THE WRONG DIRECTION. I DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT; STOPPED THE TURN; AND STARTED A L TURN TO INTERCEPT THE 176 DEG RADIAL OF CRI. ATC CALLED US IMMEDIATELY AND ORDERED AN IMMEDIATE L TURN TO 180 DEGS; THEN ASKED IF WE HAD BEEN ISSUED THE CRI CLB. WE ANSWERED YES. THEY INFORMED US THAT WE TURNED THE WRONG WAY. THE FLT PROCEEDED NORMALLY FROM THAT POINT ON BY US HAND FLYING THE ACFT. THE COLLINS PRO-LINE 21 FMS SYSTEM IN OUR ACFT IS NOTORIOUS FOR THIS TYPE OF FAULT. COLLINS REFUSES TO ADMIT ANY TECHNICAL PROB WITH THE FMS SYSTEM. WE HAVE RECENTLY FILED AN OFFICIAL COMPLAINT WITH THE COLLINS TECH PEOPLE FOR THIS VERY PROB. OUR COMPANY POLICY FROM THIS POINT FORWARD WILL BE TO HAND FLY ANY CRITICAL PROC. WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT COLLINS AVIONICS WILL DO NOTHING TO SOLVE THIS FLEET PROB. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER ACFT. ATC'S DUE DILIGENCE AND FLT CREW ACTION PREVENTED ANY FURTHER PROBS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR ADVISED THE FMS ALSO HAS A HISTORY OF STARTING A R HAND 360 DEG TURN AT LOLLY INTERSECTION ON THE KINGSTON ARR TO JFK. INITIALLY NON RESPONSIVE; THE MFGR HAS RECENTLY ISSUED A BULLETIN REGARDING THE LOLLY ANOMALY; BUT HAVE YET TO RESPOND TO THE CRI PROB ADDRESSED IN THE RPT. THE STATED THE BULLETIN REGARDING THE LOLLY PROB SEEMS UNRELATED TO THE CRI ANOMALY INASMUCH AS NO WAYPOINTS ARE/WERE DELETED IN THE CRI SCENARIO.
