AFTER LNDG IN RDD; I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM THE DEPT OF ENERGY. THIS IS WHEN I REALIZED I HAD MADE A SERIOUS MISTAKE ON MY FLT PLAN FROM LAS TO RDD. AFTER TAKING OFF VFR FROM LAS I WAS ON A COURSE OF ABOUT 285 DEGS DIRECT TO RDD AT 12500 FT MSL. AFTER LEAVING OR FLYING OUTSIDE THE MODE 'C' RING; I WAS STILL ON COM 119.35 AND STILL HAD A DISCRETE SQUAWK CODE. I DO NOT BELIEVE DEP EVER TOLD ME TO SQUAWK 1200 OR CHANGE TO ADVISORY. THE BEJ35V HAS A GARMIN GPS 430 (APCH CERTIFIED). IT FLASHED THE RESTRICTED AREA 20 MILES PRIOR TO ME FLYING INTO IT. BEFORE ENTERING THE RESTRICTED AREA ABOUT 20 NM MILES; I XMITTED TWICE ON 119.35; BUT NO ONE ANSWERED BACK. THEN BEFORE ENTERING THE RESTRICTED AREA I CHANGED MY SQUAWK BACK TO 1200 AND XMITTED TWO CALLS TO ZLA; THE CLOSEST STATION 40 NM THE CTLING AGENCY FOR R4807A AND R4808N. STILL NO ANSWER. AFTER THIS I CONTINUED ON COURSE THINKING THE AREA WAS 'COLD' AND ENCROACHED R4808N AND R4807A A TOTAL OF 52.5 NM STRAIGHT LINE APPROX 285 DEGS AT 150 KTS AT 12500 FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES. I DIDNT REALIZE I MADE A MISTAKE UNTIL THE PHONE CALL ON THE GND AT RDD. I SHOULD NOT HAVE FLOWN INTO THIS AREA. I BELIEVED THIS AREA WAS 'COLD.' I AM USED TO FLYING NEAR AN ALERT AREA AND I PERCEIVED IT TO BE THE SAME. I SHOULD HAVE FLOWN A SHORT DISTANCE S AND AVOIDED THE AREA ALTOGETHER WITH VERY LITTLE TIME PENALTY. I DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE RESTRICTED ZONE AND MADE A BAD JUDGEMENT. I AM VERY SORRY FOR THIS MISTAKE.
