B747-400 FLT CREW ABORTS TKOF AFTER #1 ENG FAILURE.
Narrative
DURING TKOF ROLL AT APPROX 40 KTS JUST AFTER ENGS HAD REACHED FULL THRUST (FULL THRUST USED DUE TO DISPATCH ITEM CONCERNING FLAP FAIRING); THERE WAS A LOUD BANG ON THE L SIDE OF THE AIRPLANE. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A LOSS OF THRUST AND YAWING TO THE L. THE GROSS WT WAS APPROX 763000 LBS AND THE CAPT WAS AT THE CTLS; SINCE THE ACFT WAS BELOW REJECTED TKOF SPD OF 85 KTS MANUAL BRAKING AND NORMAL ABORTED TKOF PROCS WERE USED. THIS INCIDENT WAS JUST AS WE PRACTICE IN THE SIMULATOR. THE FLYING FO INITIALLY ASSISTED THE CAPT IN BRAKE APPLICATION. THE ACFT NEVER EXITED THE RWY SURFACE. IT ACTUALLY ONLY GOT APPROX 1/2 WAY FROM THE RWY CTRLINE TO THE EDGE OF THE RWY. FOLLOWING THE IMMEDIATE ABORT PROC; WE NOTED RPM DECREASING ON #1 ENG AND A SLOW BUT STEADY EGT RISE. #1 ENG WAS SHUT DOWN AT APPROX 660 DEGS. AFT PURSER RPTED SEEING FIERY PIECES OF METAL COME OUT THE TAIL OF THE #1 ENG. THE PEOPLE WERE TOLD TO REMAIN SEATED AND WE EXITED THE RWY AND TAXIED TO A REMOTE SPOT WHERE MAINT INSPECTED THE ENG AND THE PAX WERE DEPLANED AND RERTED.
