Synopsis

MD83 CREW EXPERIENCED A PACK OVERHEAT MALFUNCTION AND SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF PRESSURIZATION ON CLBOUT.

Narrative

DURING CLB APPROX AMBIENTS AFTER TKOF; THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT CALLED TO SAY IT WAS COLD IN THE FORWARD CABIN. THE FO ADJUSTED THE TEMP CONTROLLERS SLIGHTLY WARMER. APPROX 3 MINS THE #2 FLT ATTENDANT CALLED AND SAID IT WAS VERY WARM IN THE BACK. THE FO READJUSTED THE TEMP CONTROLLERS COOLER; THEN CHKED THE SUPPLY TEMP. THE SUPPLY TEMP WAS PEGGED AT 150 DEGS. NEXT THE FO NOTICED THE R PACK PRESSURE GAUGE WAS READING 0 PSI. THE L PACK PRESSURE GAUGE WAS READING ABOUT 28 PSI. THE CABIN ALT WAS CLBING AT ABOUT 1500 FPM AND THE CABIN WAS NOW PASSING THROUGH 10000 FT. WE IMMEDIATELY COMPLETED THE RED BOX PROCS FOR CABIN ALT WARNING/RAPID DEPRESSURIZATION; CALLED ATC AND TOLD THEM WE NEEDED AN IMMEDIATE DSCNT TO 14000 FT. NOW THE L PACK PRESSURE GAUGE WAS READING LESS THAN 10 PSI. WE INITIATED THE EMER DSCNT AND COMPLETED THE CABIN ALT WARNING/RAPID DEPRESSURIZATION CHKLIST AND THE EMER DSCNT CHKLIST AND TURNED BACK DURING THE DSCNT. WE LEVELED OFF AT 14000 FT. AT THIS TIME BOTH THE L AND THE R PACKS CAME BACK ON AND RESTORED CABIN PRESSURIZATION TO NORMAL. WE CONTINUED BACK AT 14000 FT AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY.
