2 C172'S DEPARTING DAB SCRAPE WINGTIPS.

Narrative

WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 7L IN DAYTONA BEACH (DAB) ALMOST READY FOR TKOF WHEN ACFT Y (A SOLO XCOUNTRY STUDENT) CALLED READY FOR TKOF IN SEQUENCE BEHIND US. WE (ACFT X) THEN CALLED READY FOR TKOF AS WELL AND WERE TOLD TO HOLD SHORT. ACFT Y HAD ALSO BEEN TOLD TO HOLD SHORT. TWR THEN CLRED ACFT Y FOR TKOF AND AS HE MANEUVERED OUT TOWARD THE RWY; TAXIED TOO CLOSE AND CLIPPED OUR L WINGTIP WITH HIS R WING. WE IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED TWR OF THE COLLISION AND REQUESTED TO RETURN TO OUR RAMP WHILE ACFT X CONTINUED INTO HIS TKOF ROLL AND TKOF. TWR QUESTIONED ACFT X SHORTLY THEREAFTER WHO REPLIED THAT HE HAD NOT FELT ANYTHING; SO TWR ASKED IF HE WANTED TO CONTINUE OR COME BACK AROUND TO LAND. HE SAID HE WOULD COME BACK TO LAND AND TWR ADVISED HIM TO PROCEED WITH CLOSED TFC. MEANWHILE TWR HAD CLRED US TO MAKE A 180 DEG TURN USING RWY 7L (AFTER THE HOLD SHORT LINE) IF NECESSARY AND CONTACT GND. WE CONTACTED GND AND TAXIED BACK TO OUR RAMP. THE SOLO STUDENT DEFINITELY DID NOT LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM BTWN HIS WING AND OURS FOR CLRNC. I SAW HIM AND DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO REACT TO MOVE OUR ACFT OUT OF THE WAY. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL BE MUCH MORE ALERT WHEN I RECOGNIZE SOLO STUDENT OPS DURING ALL PHASES OF FLT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 691351: I STOPPED THE ACFT AND DID MY RUN-UP BEFORE TKOF. I HAD NOT HEARD THE ACFT IN FRONT TO BE READY WHEN I WAS FINISHED SO I MADE A CALL TO THE TWR STATING I WAS A STUDENT PLT AT N4 IN SEQUENCE READY FOR TKOF. TWR THEN GAVE ME CLRNC TO TKOF; SO I PROCEEDED TO GO AROUND TO THE L OF ACFT X TO GO OUT ON THE RWY.
