C172 PLT HAS CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH A CPR JET DURING CLB TO CRUISE VICINITY OF SBJ VOR.

Narrative

I DEPARTED 47N (CENTRAL JERSEY REGIONAL) AT XA30L IN AN INTRO FLT LESSON TO A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT IN A C172SP IN A NW HDG. WE CLRED THE AREA WHILE IN THE CLB BY MAKING L AND R 90 DEG TURNS. I WAS SEARCHING FOR TFC AS WE BEGUN TO LEVEL OFF AT 2800 FT WHEN I SPOTTED A CPR JET TO MY L SIDE (10-11 O'CLOCK POS) AT ABOUT 3-5 MI AWAY HORIZONTALLY AND ABOUT 500 FT HIGHER AND CLOSING IN. I IMMEDIATELY BEGAN EVASIVE ACTION BY DSNDING AND TURNING TO MY R. I NOTICED THAT THE JET WAS CONTINUING TO APCH US AND WAS NOW DSNDING AND APCHING RAPIDLY. I GOT VERY NERVOUS -- I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO COLLIDE WITH THIS CPR JET. I QUICKLY LEVEL OFF AND TURN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION (L) TO MAINTAIN VISUAL WITH THE JET. AT THIS TIME; THE JET TOOK EVASIVE ACTION AND AGGRESSIVELY TURNED TO HIS L AND APPEARED TO BE CLBING WHEN IT PASSED NEAR US. IN MY OPINION; THE JET CAME AS CLOSE AS 500 FT HORIZONTALLY AND PERHAPS 500 FT VERTICALLY. I QUICKLY RECYCLED MY XPONDER; TUNED IN 121.5 AND MONITORED 127.6 (EWR APCH FREQ) TO RPT THE NMAC. BUT 127.6 WAS VERY BUSY AND I DID NOT WANT TO STEP-IN IN ANYONE ELSE'S CLRNC. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT CONTINUED WITHOUT INCIDENT.
