Narrative

ABOUT 5 KTS BEFORE VR WE RECEIVED A MASTER CAUTION LIGHT ON RWY 8L IN HNL. FO WAS FLYING AND I SAID 'CONTINUE.' AFTER LIFTOFF WE LOOKED UP TO FIND A PACK TRIP (R) OFF LIGHT. WE ALSO SMELLED A STRONG BURNING RUBBER SMELL WHICH THE FLT ATTENDANTS ALSO SMELLED. THEY CALLED US SHORTLY AFTER TKOF TO TELL US SO. WE RAN THE QRH FOR PACK TRIP OFF LIGHT. I TOLD THE FLT ATTENDANTS TO LET ME KNOW IF THE SMELL GOT WORSE. BEFORE WE RAN THE CHKLIST; THE FO STATED HE WOULD TURN OFF THE R PACK. I SAID 'OK.' WE RAN THE CHKLIST AND THE LIGHT DID NOT RESET; SO WE CONTINUED WITH 1 PACK AND THE R PACK IN THE OFF POS. WE DISCUSSED IT AND BOTH FELT COMFORTABLE CONTINUING THE FLT. THE SMELL WENT AWAY AND THERE WAS NO SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT OR CABIN. ALSO THE ACFT SEEMED TO BE PRESSURIZING NORMALLY WITH 1 PACK. I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT WE ALSO EXPERIENCED A LARGE PRESSURE CHANGE AS WE ADDED PWR ON TKOF AND EXPERIENCED PRESSURE CHANGES AS WE TAXIED WHEN PWR WAS CHANGED. DURING CRUISE; THE FLT ATTENDANTS CALLED AND SAID THEY HEARD A LOW RUMBLING NOISE COMING FROM THE R OVERWING EXIT. I TOLD THEM TO LET ME KNOW IF IT GOT WORSE. I FELT IT WOULD BE OK. MAYBE IT WAS SOMETHING THAT GOT CAUGHT IN THE RAM AIR OPENING. ON DSCNT ABOUT 500 FT; WHEN WE ADDED PWR; WE EXPERIENCED A LARGE PRESSURE CHANGE AGAIN. ON DSCNT; WE ALSO SMELLED A BURNING RUBBER SMELL.
