Narrative

RETURNING FROM A STANDARD LCL FLT IN VFR CONDITIONS; I ELECTED TO PERFORM A PATTERN ENTRY MANEUVER THAT WILL BE REQUIRED FOR USE IN AN UPCOMING PROJECT AS A WAY OF PROVIDING TRAINING AND TO INCREASE PROFICIENCY WITH ONE OTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN ON A L XWIND FOR RWY 23 AT SHD ARPT; I DECIDED THAT GIVEN THEIR POS AND THE TYPE OF APCH THAT I WANTED TO PERFORM IT WOULD BE SAFER TO ENTER R-HAND TFC FOR RWY 23 GIVEN THAT THERE WAS JUST THE 1 OTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN AT THAT TIME. IN THE TIME IT TOOK TO ESTABLISH A R-HAND BASE; THE OTHER ACFT TURNED A L-HAND BASE FOR RWY 23 SHORTLY AFTER ME. I HAD JUDGED DISTANCE; CLOSURE RATES; AND SPDS OF BOTH ACFT AND DEEMED IT SAFE TO CONTINUE THE APCH AS I WOULD HAVE ARRIVED AND CLRED THE RWY PRIOR TO THE OTHER TFC HAVING TOUCHED DOWN. DURING THE ENTIRE TIME; I HAD THE OTHER ACFT IN SIGHT AND CONSIDERED THE SITUATION SAFE TO PROCEED. AS I WAS BEGINNING A TURN TO FINAL; THE OTHER ACFT SPOTTED US AND DEEMED THE SITUATION TO BE UNSAFE GIVEN THE PROX AND DECIDED TO MAKE A R-HAND TURN TO EXIT THE PATTERN AND RETURN FOR A LNDG WHEN I HAD CLRED THE RWY. DURING THE WHOLE EVENT; WE HAD BEEN IN RADIO CONTACT; AND THE TFC OPPOSITE US HAD QUESTIONED OUR USE OF THE R-HAND TFC PATTERN AND SUBSEQUENTLY FELT THAT THE SITUATION BECAME UNSAFE AT THE POINT THAT THEY DISCONTINUED THE APCH. I CLRED THE RWY AND APOLOGIZED ON THE RADIO FOR HAVING MADE THEM UNCOMFORTABLE AND CREATING AN INCONVENIENCE FOR THEM AS THEY FELT THEY HAD TO RE-ENTER THE PATTERN. THE PLT IN THE OTHER ACFT EXPRESSED HIS ANGST AT THE SITUATION VERBALLY OVER THE RADIO AND PROCEEDED TO CONTINUE PATTERN WORK. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 700062: WHILE THE SYMPHONY 160 AND THE BE-200 WERE PARALLELING IN THE DOWNWIND LEGS FOR RWY 23 A DIALOG WAS MAINTAINED BTWN THE ACFT OF POS AND INTENTS. DUE TO MY UNFAMILIARITY OF THE COURSE RULES AT SHD; I QUESTIONED THE PF IF THE ARPT HAD A RESTR FOR L-HAND PATTERN ONLY VICE THE RECOMMENDED PATTERN SUGGESTED IN THE AIM. HE STATED IT DID NOT. I LATER RESEARCHED AND FOUND NO RESTR BUT FELT THAT A NUMBER OF 'OTHER' OPTIONS COULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO PREVENT THE SYMPHONY PLT FROM PERCEIVING AN UNSAFE CONDITION.
