PA23 INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT UTILIZE ALTERNATIVE GEAR EXTENSION PROCS. SAFE LNDG WAS MADE.
Narrative
MY INSTRUCTOR AND I WERE FINISHING UP MY COMMERCIAL FLT TRAINING AND RECEIVED OUR CLRNC TO LAND ON RWY 21 AT MKC. APCH-TO-LAND CHKLIST COMPLETED; GEAR LEVER MOVED TO EXTEND POS. I COUNTED TO 10 SECONDS AND SO NO GEAR DOWN INDICATIONS. I DID; HOWEVER; FEEL THE AIRFLOW SHIFT FROM THE MAIN GEAR PARTIALLY EXTENDING. I THEN RECYCLED THE GEAR ONLY TO GET THE SAME RESULT. I INFORMED DOWNTOWN TWR THAT I WAS GOING AROUND BECAUSE I HAD NO INDICATION OF GEAR BEING DOWN AND LOCKED. THEY ADVISED ME TO MAKE R TFC AND PERFORM A COUPLE OF 360 DEG TURNS ON THE W SIDE OF THE ARPT SO THEY COULD HAVE A LOOK. ON THE FIRST PASS; THEY INFORMED US THAT OUR MAIN GEAR (BOTH) WERE DOWN; BUT NOSE GEAR WAS UP. WE RECYCLED THE GEAR AGAIN AND MADE ANOTHER 360 DEG TURN. THIS TIME AROUND TWR ADVISED THAT THE L MAIN WAS DOWN; NOSE GEAR WAS DOWN; BUT L MAIN WAS UP. I INFORMED THE TWR THAT I WOULD FLY N AND GET SOME AIRSPD BLED OFF TO PERFORM THE EMER GEAR EXTENSION PROCS. AS I WAS PERFORMING THE PROCS; I COULD FEEL THE GEAR DISRUPTING THE AIR FLOW AND HEARD ALL 3 GEAR LOCK WITH DISTINCT CLUNKS. TWR CALLED OUR BASE LEG; AND ADVISED WE FLY OVER THE FIELD AS LOW APCH AND LET AN INSTRUCTOR HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 21 IN ANOTHER ACFT HAVE A LOOK AND THAT THE TWR WOULD CONFIRM WHAT THEY SAW. WE MADE THE LOW APCH AND BOTH THE ACFT ON THE GND AND TWR CONFIRMED THAT ALL 3 GEAR WERE DOWN. WE WERE THEN CLRED L TFC AND SHORTLY AFTER WE TURNED DOWNWIND; RECEIVED OUR CLRNC TO LAND ON RWY 21. SOFT FIELD LNDG PERFORMED AND KEPT NOSEWHEEL OFF THE GND AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. ALL GEAR WERE DOWN AND LOCKED; AND WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO THE RAMP WITH TWR. ACFT WAS BROUGHT TO A STOP AND SHUT DOWN.
