ENRTE FROM GRR TO YIP; FERRY FLT PART 91. CLRNC: RADAR VECTORS TO LAN SPRTN3 YIP. A FEW MILES WEST OF SPRTN FIX; LANSING APCH CHANGED OUR CLRNC TO DIRECT TO SVM (SALEM) VOR. BASED ON THE LATEST ATIS; WE WERE PLANNING A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 23R. ABOUT 6 MILES FROM SVM; APCH CTL GAVE US A WX UPDATE AND CLRED US FOR THE VOR-A APCH DIRECT SVM; MAINTAIN 3000 FT AND CONTACT YIP TWR AT SVM. WE LOADED THE PROC IN THE FMS AND BRIEF THE APCH. AT SVM WE STARTED THE PROC TURN OUTBOUND AND CONTACTED THE TWR. TWR TOLD US TO CONTACT APCH IMMEDIATELY. APCH QUESTIONED WHY WE WERE TURNING OUTBOUND. APCH GAVE US A SW HDG TO INTERCEPT THE FINAL APCH COURSE AND RECLRED US FOR THE VOR-A APCH. UPON LNDG AND SHUTDOWN; WE REALIZED WE FAILED TO READ THE NOPT SECTOR NOTE ON THE APCH PLATE WHEN APCHING SVM FROM THE NW. LAST MINUTE CHANGES TO THE WX AND APCH LED TO DEVIATING FROM THE NOTATION ON THE APCH PLATE NOT AUTHORIZING A PROC TURN WHEN ARRIVING FROM THE NW SECTOR. IN ADDITION; NOT BEING RADAR VECTORED TO FINAL ASSUMING A PROC TURN WAS REQUIRED LED TO THE DEV.
