Narrative
ALL CABINS HAD FINISHED THE DINNER SVC. SOME FLT ATTENDANTS WERE ON 'FIRST BREAK.' WHILE I DID NOT NOTE THE TIME; ABOUT 3 1/2 HRS AFTER TKOF (MY BEST GUESS); FLT ATTENDANTS HEARD AN UNUSUAL NOISE. SOME FLT ATTENDANTS DESCRIBED THE SOUND LIKE A CAR BACKFIRING. FLT ATTENDANT #1 RPTED THE NOISE TO THE COCKPIT CREW. ABOUT 20 MINS LATER; I PICKED UP A CALL FROM THE COCKPIT AT 1R. THE CAPT ADVISED THAT THEY HEARD THE NOISE ALSO AND HAD BEEN ON THE PHONE WITH MAINT. IT WAS DECIDED TO LAND THE ACFT. WE WOULD BE LNDG IN ZZZ IN 55 MINS. FLT ATTENDANT #1 AND I GAVE HER THE PHONE FOR FURTHER COCKPIT INSTRUCTIONS. I PROCEEDED TO ADVISE OTHER FLT ATTENDANTS THAT WE WOULD BE LNDG AT ZZZ IN 55 MINS SO START SECURING THE GALLEYS. FLT ATTENDANT #1 ADVISED FLT ATTENDANTS THAT A NORMAL LNDG WAS EXPECTED. HOWEVER; IF AN EVAC BECAME NECESSARY; THE CAPT WOULD USE SIGNAL BY WHAT EXITS NOT TO USE. WE DUMPED SOME FUEL. SEVERAL MORE TIMES THE ENG MADE THE STRANGE SOUNDS. PAX SEATED AT 31HJ SAW HUGE SPARKS COMING FROM THE R-HAND ENG. THE CREW SHUT DOWN THE ENG SOME TIME BEFORE LNDG. WE LANDED SAFELY. FIRE TRUCKS MET OUR ACFT. WE PARKED AWAY FROM THE TERMINAL UNTIL THE FIRE DEPT AND MAINT CHKED THE ACFT TO BE SURE THE ACFT WAS SAFE TO TAXI TO THE TERMINAL (PROCS REQUIRED BY THE ARPT). WE ARRIVED AT THE GATE AT XA52.
