Synopsis

AN ACR PLT TURNED ONTO EDFH RWY 21 AT TXWY F IN ERROR; LEAVING USEABLE RWY BEHIND THE ACFT. RPTR CITES CHARTING AND VISIBILITY ISSUES AS CONTRIBUTORY.

Narrative

JUST AS I TURNED ONTO THE RUNWAY; I SAW AN ADDITIONAL TURNAROUND THAT I DID NOT SEE WHILE HOLDING SHORT FOR TKOF. I STARTED QUESTIONING MYSELF JUST AS THE TWR CALLED US TO VERIFY OUR INTENTIONS. AFTER REALIZING OUR MISTAKE; WE VACATED THE RWY AND THEN WERE GIVEN ADDITIONAL TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND TKOF CLRNC WITHOUT INCIDENT. AFTER CRITIQUING MYSELF; I FEEL I MADE THE WRONG TURN DUE TO TWO ITEMS. WHILE HOLDING SHORT ON RWY 21; THE TURNAROUND IN THE CLEARWAY IS HARD TO SEE AS IT IS DOWNHILL AND QUITE NARROW. ALSO; THE COMMERCIAL ARPT PLATE IS VERY MISLEADING AS THE TURNAROUND IS COVERED WITH THE APCH LIGHTS DIAGRAM AND IS EASY TO MISS. I FEEL A NOTAM DRAWING ATTENTION TO THIS WOULD HAVE PREVENTED MY WRONG TURN.CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR IDENTIFIED THE STOPWAY NE OF TXWY F INTXN WITH RWY 21 ONLY AFTER THE TWR CTLR QUESTIONED THEIR INTENTIONS. EVEN AFTER STUDYING THE CHART CAREFULLY PRIOR TO TAXIING AND AT THE TIME OF ENTRY ONTO RWY 21; NONE OF THE 4 PLTS IN THE FLT STATION IDENTIFIED THE STOPWAY AS HAVING A TURNAROUND SUITABLE FOR THEIR TYPE OF ACFT. AFTER THE TWR OPERATOR QUESTIONED THE PLTS; THEY REALIZED THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER 800 FT IN THE STOPWAY AVAILABLE AND NECESSARY TURNAROUND IN THAT AREA. BECAUSE OF THE ACFT'S WT; THE STOPWAY WAS NECESSARY FOR TKOF EVEN WITH A BLEEDS OFF PERFORMANCE. THE RPTR STATED IF THE ACFT HAD TAKEN OFF FROM THE TXWY F INTXN AND HAD AN ENG LOSS; TKOF CAPABILITY WOULD HAVE BEEN QUESTIONABLE. THE RPTR SUGGESTED INCLUDING A NOTE ON THE COMMERCIAL CHART IDENTIFYING THE STOPWAY AND TURNAROUND AREA MORE CLEARLY.
