A B737-700 WAS DISPATCHED WITH THE INCORRECT VHF TRANSCEIVER INSTALLED IN #1 POS. THIS WAS A 1 TECHNICIAN TERMINAL OP WITH A HVY WORKLOAD.

Narrative

WORKING TIRE CHANGE ON AN ACFT; HOOKED UP HUGE TIRE CART TO TRUCK WHICH TAKES 3 MEN AND 40 BOYS TO MOVE THIS THING AROUND. ARRIVED AT ACFT; POSITIONED JACK THEN ROLLED OUT HOSE FROM NITROGEN BOTTLE. WENT TO HOOK HOSE TO JACK AND FOUND THE QUICK DISCONNECT MISSING FROM END OF HOSE. CALLED MAINT CTL LET THEM KNOW THERE MIGHT BE A DELAY AS ONLY 1 PERSON ON SHIFT. NEW CAPT SAID CAPT AUDIO RECEPTION IS INTERMITTENT ON ALL RADIOS AND INTERCOMS. AND THAT IT WAS IN THE BOOK AND HAD A HISTORY. I CALLED MAINT CTL AND WE DECIDED TO TRY A TRANSCEIVER AND AUDIO SELECT PANEL IF I HAD THEM IN STOCK. I WENT TO STOCKROOM FOUND A TRANSCEIVER AND AUDIO SELECT PANEL. RETURNED TO ACFT WITHOUT CHKING COMPUTER PARTS CATALOG. IT NEVER ENTERED MY MIND. CHANGED PARTS; OP CHK THE SYS EVERYTHING WORKED GREAT. WHILE CHANGING PARTS TOOK THE PARTS TAG AND WROTE DOWN OLD SERIAL NUMBER; THEN WENT UPSTAIRS. WHILE SIGNING OFF LOGBOOK NOTICED THE NEW SERIAL NUMBER WAS LONGER THAN THE OLD SERIAL NUMBER. FIGURED THAT IT WAS JUST A NEWER BOX AND PRESSED ON. IT NEVER EVEN OCCURRED TO ME TO CHK THE OLD BOX PART NUMBER. WHEN I FINALLY GOT BACK TO THE OFFICE I WAS FINISHING UP THE PART TAG AND I NOTICED THE OLD TRANSCEIVER BOX HAD A DIFFERENT PART NUMBER. THAT'S WHEN IT HIT ME I FORGOT TO CHK COMPUTER PARTS CATALOG. WENT OVER TO COMPUTER CHKED COMPUTER PARTS CATALOG BUT ONLY THE NEW PART NUMBER WAS LISTED. I THOUGHT THAT TO BE STRANGE THAT BOTH PART NUMBERS WERE NOT LISTED SO I CALLED MAINT CTL AND ASKED FOR HELP. WELL; I SHOULD HAVE USED THE #1 POS FOR #3 POS. SO I ASKED WHERE DOES IT SAY THAT AND THE CTLR TOLD ME THERE IS A #3 TO THE R OF THE NUMBER. WELL LOW AND BEHOLD THERE IS A #3 TO THE R OF THE NUMBER. 1) WHY DOES A 1 PERSON OP HAVE SUCH A BIG CUMBERSOME TIRE CART? A SMALLER COMPACT ONE WOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER TO USE. 2) WHY ARE WE STOCKED WITH A TRANSCEIVER FOR #3 AND NOT ONE FOR #1 AND #2 ALSO? MAYBE #3 CAN BE USED FOR ALL 3 POS.
