FLT CREW OF A P180 EXPERIENCE RWY INCURSION WHILE TAXIING. RPTR CITES INEXPERIENCED COPLT AND THE EFB'S AS A DISTR.

Narrative

MY COPLT WAS TAXIING TO RWY 33. WE HAD JUST STOPPED TO PICK UP A DOG FOR OUR PAX; HAVING LANDED ON RWY 33 AND TAXIED TO RAMP. ON TAXI OUT; WE BOTH HAD OUR EFB'S (11 1/2 INCH BY 8 INCH BY 2 INCH; APPROX 4 LBS) ON THE DET ARPT DIAGRAM. I HAD REMINDED HIM OF THE RTE. IT'S SIMPLE BUT LIKE MOST ARPTS NOT WELL MARKED. HE BECAME DISORIENTED WHEN XING RWY 25/7 SO I TOLD HIM TO STOP; HE DID SO ON THE RWY! I TOLD HIM TO PLEASE CONTINUE; NEVER STOP ON A RWY. HE'S A BIT INEXPERIENCED; CHARGES WITHOUT THINKING; AND THIS WAS OUR FIRST TRIP (2ND DAY) TOGETHER. I COULD NOT READ MY EFB FOR THE LOCATION SO REACHED FOR IT. HE STARTED TO TAXI AND BEFORE I COULD GET BACK IN THE LOOP HAD TURNED THE CORNER AND PASSED THE HOLD LINE FOR RWY 33. I ASKED WHY HE CONTINUED AND HE SAID HE DIDN'T SEE A HOLD LINE! TWR CALLED AND SAID WE PASSED THE HOLD LINE BUT THANKFULLY NO TFC! OUR EFB'S ARE LARGE; HVY AND DIFFICULT TO READ IN CERTAIN LIGHT. WHEN YOU USE THEM YOU BECOME A COMPUTER OPERATOR AND IT TAKES MOST OF YOUR ATTN; ESPECIALLY IF YOU MUST HOLD THEM (THEY ARE NOT MOUNTED). GREAT BOXES FOR INFO BUT VERY IMPRACTICAL IN A SMALL CPR COCKPIT. REMEDY IS MORE MONITORING OF INEXPERIENCED COPLTS; HARD COPY OF DIFFICULT ARPTS.
