Narrative

APCHING RWY 26L FOR TKOF ON TXWY AE; WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO HOLD SHORT AT M1 HOLD POINT; I WAS MAKING THE 'PREPARE FOR TKOF' PA AS THE FO RECEIVED THE 'POS AND HOLD' CLRNC FROM ATC. EXPECTING TXWY M AS THE EASTERNMOST TXWY; I WAS TAXIING PAST THE TURN TO M1 TOWARD TXWY Y AS RELIEF PLT CALLED OUT 'HEY!' TO ALERT ME THAT I WAS PASSING THE TURN TOWARD THE RWY. STOPPED THE ACFT PROMPTLY; BUT WE WERE TOO FAR TO TURN AROUND SAFELY AND THE RAMP AREA S OF PIER 1 APPEARED TOO NARROW FOR A 180 DEG TURN; SO WE CALLED FOR A TUG TO PUSH US ABOUT 50 FT BACK TO RESUME APCH TO TXWY M. THIS WAS MY FIRST TKOF AT EGKK FROM OTHER THAN TXWYS B OR A. EXPECTING THE USUAL AND RECEIVING A CLRNC OUTSIDE THE ORDINARY; I TOOK FROM A GLANCE AT THE CHART THAT TXWY M WAS 'AT THE END;' SO I PROCEEDED TOWARD THE EASTERNMOST TXWY; ONLY TO FIND IT WAS ACTUALLY TXWY Y; JUST BEYOND THE RWY WHICH I WAS HEADING FOR. THE CATCH BY THE RELIEF PLT WAS JUST A FEW SECONDS TOO LATE DURING XMISSIONS BY BOTH THE FO AND MYSELF THAT SET ME UP FOR A PERFECT TRAP FOR A MOST EMBARRASSING SITUATION. GREATER ADVANCE PLANNING AND CHART FAMILIARITY ALONG WITH EARLIER 'TKOF' PA'S SHOULD HELP ALLEVIATE THE RISK OF SUCH SLIPS IN THE FUTURE.
