MD11 CREW MAKES HARD LNDG AT DFW THAT RESULTS IN TAIL STRIKE.

Narrative

THE CTLR CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 18R. THE CAPT TURNED ONTO A DOGLEG TO INTERCEPT THE VISUAL CTRLINE TO RWY 18R. APCHING THE VISUAL CTRLINE; I GOT UNCOMFORTABLE WITH OUR CLOSURE RATE TO THE CTRLINE AND THEN TOLD THE CAPT; RATHER AGGRESSIVELY; TO TURN. HE IMMEDIATELY INITIATED A TURN ONTO FINAL AND HE OVERSHOT THE CTRLINE MOMENTARILY. THE CAPT THEN RETURNED BACK TO THE CTRLINE AND CONTINUED OUR DSCNT. I REENGAGED THE FLT DIRECTOR APCH/LAND MODE SWITCH FOR HIM AND THE CAPT RECAPTURED THE RWY 18R ILS LOC/GS AND CONTINUED TO HAND-FLY THE APCH. THE REST OF THE APCH WAS UNEVENTFUL WITH THE ACFT STABLE AND ON SPD; ALL THE WAY DOWN TO LNDG. THE CAPT THEN LANDED VERY HARD AND DURING THE ROLLOUT; DFW TWR TOLD US THAT WE HAD A TAIL STRIKE. I ACKNOWLEDGED THE TWR. AFTER WE TURNED OFF THE ACTIVE RWY; WE PERFORMED OUR NORMAL POST LNDG DUTIES; TAXIED IN AND THEN SHUT DOWN THE ACFT AT THE GATEWAY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 716855: FLEW A VISUAL APCH BACKED UP BY THE ILS TO RWY 18R AT DFW. THE APCH WAS HAND FLOWN FROM ABOUT 2000 FT AGL AND APPEARED TO BE STABILIZED AT 1000 FT AGL. THE LNDG WAS FIRM AND THE ACFT BOUNCED. I ATTEMPTED TO MAINTAIN THE LNDG ATTITUDE AND THE ACFT TOUCHED DOWN THE SECOND TIME. THE ROLLOUT WAS NORMAL. AS WE WERE CLRING THE RWY THE TWR CALLED AND RPTED THAT WE HAD SUSTAINED A TAIL STRIKE.
