INBOUND TO LAX; A LATE CHANGE IN STAR ASSIGNMENT TO SEAVU RESULTS IN COCKPIT CONFUSION AND A POSSIBLE ALTDEV.

Narrative

ON A FLT PLAN; I BELIEVE WE WERE FILED FOR THE BASET 3 ARR INTO LAX; THEN AT ABOUT TRTLE INTXN; SOCAL CHANGED ARR TO THE 'SEAVU 1' AND ASSIGNED RWY 25R AS THE LNDG RWY. THE ARR AND RWY WERE PROGRAMMED INTO THE FMC. DURING REVIEWING OF PROC; ATC BEGAN ISSUING A SERIES OF SPD REDUCTIONS; WHICH 160 KTS WAS THE LAST. AT ABOUT LUVYN INTXN; WE BEGAN TO SLOW ACCORDINGLY. WE WERE USING COMMERCIAL CHART #1 CHARTS AND I FAILED TO SEE THE NOTATIONS ON THE INSET FOR XING ALTS FROM KRAIN INTXN TO MUSIK INTXN AND SUBSEQUENTLY DID NOT NOTIFY ATC OF PENDING INABILITY TO MEET RESTRS. MY FO BEGAN TELLING ME 'YOU'VE GOT TO GET DOWN' AND HE SET A VERT SPD DSCNT OF A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT. I READJUSTED THE MCP FOR THE SPD REQUESTED BY ATC AND ASKED MY FO WHERE AND WHAT THE RESTRS WERE. I THEN DID MY BEST TO MEET THE RESTRS AT THE SPD REQUESTED. WE EXECUTED THE ILS TO AND LANDED ON RWY 25R WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. ATC NEVER QUESTIONED US. I BELIEVE THE COMMERCIAL CHART #1 SEAVU 1 CHART IS TOO COMPLEX TO BE ASSIGNED WITHOUT ADEQUATE TIME TO REVIEW ALL THE SMALL NOTATIONS. MY RECENT LACK OF EXPERIENCE; DEGRADED AVIONICS AND UNFAMILIARITY WITH LAX ALL CONTRIBUTED TO SOME DEGREE.
