MD80 FLT CREW HAS IMPROPER DE-ICING PROCEDURES PERFORMED AT DFW.

Narrative

WE TAXIED TO THE SW PAD FOR DE-ICING. WE WERE AT THAT TIME EXPERIENCING MODERATE SNOW. ONCE WE FINALLY GOT IN LINE TO BE DE-ICED WE RECEIVED ONE COATING OF TYPE 1 FLUID. THE CAPT IN ACFT NUMBER XXX; WHO WAS DE-ICED BEFORE ME ASKED IF HE WOULD RECEIVE A SECOND COATING OF TYPE 1 FLUID. 'SNOWMAN' SAID NO. THE CAPT OF ACFT NUMBER XXX QUOTED THE MANUAL ABOUT THE FIRST APPLICATION OF TYPE 1 IS A DE-ICE. AND THE SECOND APPLICATION IS AN ANTI-ICE GOOD FOR 11-18 MINS IN THE SNOW INTENSITY WE WERE EXPERIENCING AT THAT TIME. 'SNOWMAN' TOLD HIM THAT IS NOT HOW THEY DO IT. THEY WOULD ONLY DO ONE APPLICATION. AND THAT HE WOULD NOT HAVE A PHILOSOPHICAL DEBATE ABOUT IT. I CALLED 'SNOWMAN' ON THE RADIO AND SUPPORTED THE OTHER CAPT. INFORMING HIM THAT THE QUOTATION THAT HE HAD READ TO HIM OVER THE RADIO FROM THE MD80 MANUAL WAS ACCURATE AND THAT MY ACFT COULD NOT LEAVE WITHOUT A SECOND APPLICATION. 'SNOWMAN' INFORMED ME THAT I COULD TAXI BACK TO THE GATE AND THEY WOULD CANCEL MY FLT. NICE THREAT. I SAID 'OK.' I GUESS I SCREWED UP; I SHOULD HAVE TAXIED BACK TO THE TERMINAL AND GONE HOME. I DIDN'T. LIVE AND LEARN. THE 'SNOWMAN' NEEDS ADDITIONAL TRAINING. HE DOES NOT KNOW THE MANUAL AND WAS ARGUING WITH US OVER ESTABLISHED PROC IN THE MD80 MANUAL. A FEW MINS LATER; WITHOUT ANYTHING BEING SAID OVER THE RADIO FROM 'SNOWMAN;' WE HAD A TRUCK COME OVER TO OUR ACFT AND APPLY A SECOND COAT OF TYPE 1 FLUID.
