AN EMB145 PILOT DEPARTED CMH DEICING PRIOR TO DE-ICE COMPLETION; POSSIBLY STRIKING DE-ICE EQUIPMENT; BECAUSE OF IMPROPER GND CREW COMMUNICATIONS.

Narrative

DEICE IN CMH. PRIOR TO TAXIING AWAY FROM THE GATE WE WERE INFORMED OF START TIME; TYPE FLUID AND INITIALS OF EMPLOYEE IN CHARGE. THIS INFO WAS CONVEYED VIA OPS FREQ BY OPS PERSONNEL NOT ON THE RAMP BUT INSIDE. AS IS NORMAL OPERATING PROC WE UNDERSTOOD THIS AS MEANING DEICE WAS COMPLETE. WE QUERIED OPS AS TO WHETHER DEICE WAS COMPLETE AND RECEIVED AN ANSWER THAT WE UNDERSTOOD AS AFFIRMATIVE. AFTER CHKING TO BEST OF OUR ABILITY THE TRUCKS WERE CLR WE BEGAN TO TAXI. UPON REACHING RWY 10R WE WERE INFORMED BY ATC THAT WE NEEDED TO RETURN TO THE GATE. UPON RETURN TO THE GATE WE WERE INFORMED THAT DEICING WAS INCOMPLETE AND UPON TAXI OUT WE MAY HAVE STRUCK THE DEICE BUCKET. UPON INSPECTION BY MAINT PERSONNEL NO DAMAGE WAS FOUND. WE WERE TOLD BY CMH ACR STATION MGR THAT SOMETIMES DEICE INFO WAS RELAYED PRIOR TO COMPLETION AND THAT THE TRUCK DRIVER WOULD ALWAYS SALUTE AT THE CONCLUSION. I INFORMED HIM THAT NO ACFT PREVIOUS TO US THAT MORNING GOT A SALUTE AND THAT OTHER ACFT WERE ONLY RELAYED INFO UPON COMPLETION OF DEICE (DEICE PERSONNEL IN ZZZ VERIFIED THAT THIS IS ACR SOP). HE ALSO SAID THAT PERSONNEL SHOULD HAVE MARSHALLED US OUT; I INFORMED HIM THAT AT NO TIME HAD I OR ANY OTHER ACFT BEEN MARSHALLED OFF THE DEICE POS THAT WE WERE USING.
