Synopsis

A MAULE PILOT FLYING AN APPROACH IN CROSSWIND CONDITIONS LOST CONTROL UPON LANDING AND GROUND LOOPED THE AIRCRAFT.

Narrative

PRIOR TO MY ENTERING CONCORD CCR AIRSPACE; I RECEIVED ATIS INFO AND CONTACTED THE TWR. WIND CONDITIONS HAD CONTINUED TO PICK UP SINCE MY DEP. I SPOKE TO THE CTLR AND RECEIVED CURRENT INFO AND WAS CLRED FOR RWY 19R. WINDS WERE APPROX 25 KTS FROM A HDG OF 250 DEGS AND GUSTING CONDITIONS. I MADE A FAILED ATTEMPT AND REQUESTED A GAR; SO I COULD OBTAIN A BETTER ALIGNMENT AND CTL. AFTER BEING CLRED BY THE TWR FOR A SECOND ATTEMPT; I HAD A GOOD ALIGNMENT AND CTL ON MY APCH TO RWY 19R. AT THE NUMBERS; I WAS APPROX 40 FT AGL AND ENCOUNTERED A WINDSHEAR WHEREBY I IMMEDIATELY DROPPED APPROX 30 FT. I ADDED PWR GAINING GND EFFECT CTL AND TOUCHED DOWN ON THE RWY. AT THIS POINT A HIGH GUST OF WIND PICKED UP MY R WING AND PUSHED ME ONTO 1 TIRE TOWARDS THE L EDGE OF THE RWY. AFTER APPLYING FULL RUDDER AND AILERON CTL INPUT AND NO RESPONSE TO OFFSET THE 30+ KT GUST I FELT THE PLANE WAS GOING TO CONTINUE TO GO OVER ONTO THE WINGTIP AND NOSE. I ADDED PWR TO TRY TO PULL OUT OF THE FAILED LNDG AND BTWN THE WIND; P FACTOR; AND AIRPLANE POS; I WAS UNABLE TO OVERCOME THE SITUATION AND GND LOOPED THE AIRPLANE IN THE GRASS OFF TO THE L SIDE OF THE RWY. THIS SITUATION AROSE DUE TO HVY WINDS WITH GUSTS IN EXCESS OF THE PLANE AND MY CTL. FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS INJURED OR NO PROPERTY DAMAGE OCCURRED. IN ORDER TO HELP PREVENT THIS SITUATION FROM OCCURRING AGAIN IN THE FUTURE I HAVE SCHEDULED ADDITIONAL GND SCHOOL AND XWIND FLT TRAINING TO BECOME MORE PROFICIENT AT SITUATION IDENT AND CTL.
