Synopsis

A CHAMPION PILOT DISTRACTED BY PERSONAL ISSUES AND SITTING IN THE REAR SEAT LANDED LONG; DEPARTED THE RWY; AND KNOCKED THE LNDG GEAR AND PROP OFF.

Narrative

I WAS A BIT FAST ON APCH AND LANDED LONG. CROSSED OVER THE PAVEMENT OF THE XWIND RWY AND WENT INTO A DITCH AND TOOK THE LNDG GEAR OFF THE ACFT AND STRUCK THE PROP. I WAS MOVING APPROX 20 KTS WHEN THE INCIDENT TOOK PLACE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES SO WE EVACED THE ACFT. PRIOR TO MOVING THE ACFT I CONTACTED THE NTSB WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT MOST LIKELY WAS NOT GOING TO BE CONSIDERED AN ACCIDENT AND I WAS GIVEN PERMISSION TO MOVE THE ACFT. THE MAIN CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THIS INCIDENT ARE STATED IN THE FIRST SENTENCE AND THAT I ELECTED TO SIT IN THE REAR SEAT (TANDEM SEATING) SO THAT MY PAX (ALSO A PLT; THOUGH NOT ENDORSED FOR A TAILWHEEL ACFT) COULD SIT IN THE FRONT. ANOTHER CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IS THAT MY MINDSET WAS NOT ON FLYING; I HAD MANY OTHER PERSONAL ISSUES THAT WERE CONSUMING MY THOUGHT PROCESS. I ACTUALLY FELT PRESSURED TO FLY. BETTER JUDGEMENT IS WHAT I NEEDED TO EXERCISE. I KNOW THAT THIS INCIDENT WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED HAD I JUST NOT ALLOWED MYSELF TO BE PRESSURED INTO FLYING; AND MOST LIKELY WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED HAD I NOT CHOSEN TO SIT IN THE BACK SEAT OF THIS TANDEM SEAT ACFT.
