A B767-300 DEVELOPED HIGH OIL TEMP ON DEPARTURE. ACFT RETURN TO LNDG BUT FAILED TO DECLARE AN EMER. ACFT REMOVED FROM SVC.

Narrative

DURING CLB OUT OF ZZZ; SAW THAT THE #2 ENG OIL TEMP WAS IN THE YELLOW BAND. I GAVE THE CTLS TO THE FO AND TOOK OUT THE PROC FOR HIGH OIL TEMP. PER THE PROC; WE SLOWLY REDUCED THE THROTTLE IN ORDER TO GET THE OIL TEMP INTO NORMAL RANGE. AFTER THE THROTTLE HAD BEEN AT IDLE FOR A COUPLE MINS; THE TEMP CAME DOWN INTO THE NORMAL RANGE. PEAK TEMP WAS ABOUT 178 DEGS. ALL OTHER ENG PARAMETERS WERE NORMAL. #2 OIL TEMP REMAINED HIGHER BY 20-40 DEGS THAN THE #1 OIL TEMP. PROC CALLED FOR A LNDG AT THE NEAREST SUITABLE ARPT. WE ASKED FOR AND IMMEDIATELY RECEIVED CLRNC FOR A TURN BACK TO ZZZ. I TALKED TO DISPATCH; ARRANGED FOR LNDG DATA TO BE SENT TO US; AND TALKED TO THE PURSER AND PAX. WHILE I WAS DOING THIS; THE FO SPOKE WITH ATC AND ARRANGED FOR AN APCH TO RWY 14R AND ALSO FOR EMER EQUIP TO ROLL. LANDED AT ZZZ SLIGHTLY OVERWT (324K) ON RWY FULL LENGTH. DUE TO STRONG WINDS AND LONG RWY; WAS ABLE TO LAND WITH AUTOBRAKES OFF AND APPLIED BRAKES MANUALLY AT 60 KTS. BRAKES STAYED COOL (1-2) ALL THE WAY TO GATE. AFTER ARRIVING AT GATE; MAINT ADVISED THAT THE #2 ENG OIL COOLER SOLENOID HAD BEEN CHANGED THE PREVIOUS EVENING. CREW AND PAX STAYED WITH AIRPLANE AT THE GATE WHILE MAINT INSPECTED THE ENG. ABOUT 45 MINS LATER; MAINT TOOK THE AIRPLANE OTS. THINGS I DIDN'T DO THAT I WOULD HAVE IF I'D THOUGHT OF THEM: 1) HIT THE 'EVENT RECORD' EICAS BUTTON WHEN THE OIL TEMP WAS HIGH; 2) DECLARE AN EMER.
