PA-28 INSTRUCTIONAL FLT FAILED TO MAINTAIN LONGITUDINAL CONTROL AND DRIFTED OFF RWY DURING A CROSSWIND LNDG LESSON.

Narrative

TRAINING MISSION FOR XWIND LNDGS. FINAL APCH ON ALTS AND CTRLINE OF RWY USING FORWARD SLIP TO MAINTAIN CTRLINE. WINDS WERE FROM 200-210 DEGS; ACTIVE RWY 27. WINDS AT 10 KTS; GUSTING TO 14-16 KTS. JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN; A WIND GUST BLEW ACFT TO THE R AND STUDENT COULD NOT MAINTAIN CTL. AS THE INSTRUCTOR; I APPLIED FULL PWR TO INITIATE THE GAR SEQUENCE; UNFORTUNATELY PROX AND AIRSPD DID NOT ALLOW. PULLED BACK ON CTL WHEEL TO AVOID IMPACT WITH RWY LIGHTS; WITH FULL PWR DRIFTED TO L OF RWY 27 AND CAME TO REST IN THE GRASS. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS INCLUDE: XWIND; LOW L MAIN STRUT; INABILITY OF STUDENT TO MAINTAIN CTL OF THE ACFT. CONTACTED TWR BY REQUEST AFTER SECURING THE AIRPLANE AND FINDING NO DAMAGE. DEBRIEFED STUDENT ON INCIDENT AND RECONFIRMED PROCS FOR XWIND LNDGS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THAT THE STUDENT BEGAN DRIFTING OFF CENTERLINE AS FLARE WAS INITIATED; BUT THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT ALT TO SAFELY EXECUTE GO-AROUND. A SUBSEQUENT CHECK RIDE WAS ADMINISTERED TO VERIFY THE INSTRUCTOR'S PROFICIENCY IN CROSSWIND LNDGS.
