Synopsis

MD-11 ANNUNCIATED INTERMITTENT ENG 1; ENG 2; AND APU FIRE WARNINGS DURING ROLLOUT. FLT CREW DEEMED THE WARNINGS ERRONEOUS AND TAXIED TO PARKING.

Narrative

DURING ROLLOUT AT LESS THAN 80 KTS; THE TRI-TONE HORN SOUNDED WITH ENG #1 FIRE; ENG #2 FIRE; AND APU FIRE DISPLAYED RAPIDLY AND INTERMITTENTLY ON THE EAD. THIS LASTED FOR A PERIOD OF ABOUT 5-8 SECONDS. THERE WERE ALSO VARIOUS CUE LIGHTS THAT INTERMITTENTLY AND RAPIDLY ILLUMINATED ON THE SYS DISPLAY CTL PANEL IN ASSOCIATION WITH OTHER LEVEL 1 AND 2 ANNUNCIATIONS ON THE EAD THAT OCCURRED TOO QUICKLY TO PROPERLY IDENT. JUST BEFORE CLRING THE RWY; ALL INDICATIONS ON THE EAD WERE CLR WITH THE EXCEPTION OF BRAKE DIFFERENTIAL TEMP AND THE HYD SYS HAD REVERTED TO MANUAL MODE. ON REVIEWING THE LOGBOOK PRIOR TO DEP; IT WAS NOTED THAT THESE SORT OF ERRONEOUS INDICATIONS HAD OCCURRED ON THE PREVIOUS 2 FLTS. BASED ON THIS KNOWLEDGE; WE MADE A DECISION AS A CREW NOT TO COMPLY WITH THE QRH CHKLIST FOR THE LEVEL 3 FIRE WARNINGS. IT SEEMED THAT THE FIRE WARNINGS WERE ERRONEOUS AND WE ALSO NOTED THAT THE LIGHTS IN THE FIRE HANDLES AND FUEL SWITCHES HAD NEVER ILLUMINATED. IT IS POSSIBLE/LIKELY THAT THIS EVENT WAS CAUSED BY A FAULTY CTL BOX IN THE FIRE DETECTION SYS SINCE DISCUSSIONS WITH MAINT PERSONNEL AND THE LOGBOOK SHOWED THAT CTL BOXES BTWN ENGS AND THE APU HAD BEEN SWAPPED FOR TROUBLESHOOTING PURPOSES. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THAT THE EAD (ELECTRONIC ANNUNCIATOR DISPLAY) FIRE WARNINGS WERE BRIEF. OTHER COCKPIT INDICATIONS FOR THE ENGS AND APU WERE NORMAL; SO THE TEMPORARY AND ERRONEOUS FIRE WARNING WERE IGNORED. THE HYD AND BRAKE TEMP INDICATIONS MAY HAVE BEEN VALID.
