Narrative
TAXIING OUT OF CARGO RAMP AT TYS ISSUED CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 23R AT TXWY G5 TO UTILIZE TXWY B FOR RWY 5L DEP. REVIEWING THE CAUTION BLOCK ON THE COMMERCIAL CHART I SAW THE NOTE REGARDING USE OF TXWY G S OF G5 THIS IMPLIED TO ME AN INTXN OF TXWY G AND G5. I ANTICIPATED SEEING A TXWY G5 SIGN BUT THERE IS NONE; ONLY TXWY G6. I WAS TOLD TO STOP AND DO A 180 DEG TURN TO AVOID ENTRY ONTO THE MILITARY RAMP. THE ACTUAL TXWY CHART COULD BE MADE MORE CLR. ALSO A 'DO NOT ENTER' SIGN AS YOU TRAVEL S ON TXWY G APCHING THE INTXN IN QUESTION COULD BE HELPFUL. IF THE SIGNAGE (AS IT EXISTS) SAYS THAT THE INTXN IN QUESTION IS TXWY G6 THEN THE NOTE SHOULD SAY 'DON'T USE TXWY G S OF G6.' THE MENTIONING OF TXWY G5 MADE ME SPECIFICALLY LOOK FOR TXWY G5 SIGN WHICH IS NOT THERE.CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT HE IS FAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT BECAUSE OF FREQUENT TRIPS. USUALLY ACFT DEPARTING THE FREIGHT RAMP ARE CLRED ACROSS THE RWY FURTHER N. THIS IS THE RPTR'S FIRST TRIP TO CROSS AT TXWY G5. WHEN HE SAW THE TXWY G5 CROSSING CONSTRAINT ON THE ARPT CHART HE WAS LOOKING FOR A TXWY G5 SIGN AFTER G6. IN THIS CASE THE ACFT WAS ABLE TO TURN AROUND BECAUSE OF ITS RELATIVELY SMALL SIZE; A LARGER ACFT PROBABLY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BECAUSE OF THE TXWY WIDTH. THE RPTR BELIEVES THAT A SIGN WELL PRIOR TO TXWY G6 SHOULD WARN CREWS NOT TO PASS TXWY G6 BUT USE TXWY G6 TO ACCESS TXWY G5.
