Synopsis

WIDEBODY FREIGHT ACFT REJECTED TKOF FOR AIRSPEED ANOMALY. PITOT TUBE COVERS WERE STILL INSTALLED.

Narrative

WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 29 OAKLAND. THE FO WAS FLYING AND THE CAPT SET TKOF PWR. THE AUTOTHROTTLES WERE MEL'ED INOP. UPON SETTING TKOF PWR; THE CAPT AND FO BOTH NOTICED AN INACCURATE PRESENTATION OF AIRSPD. WE WERE RECEIVING A DIGITAL READOUT; BUT THE AIRSPD TAPES NEVER CAME DOWN. THE TKOF WAS REJECTED AT 100 KTS. WE RETURNED TO THE OAKLAND RAMP. WE WERE TOLD THE PITOT TUBE COVERS WERE STILL ON. MAINT PERFORMED AN ADIRU CHK AND RETURNED THE ACFT TO SVC. THE FO RECALLED SEEING THE PITOT COVERS INSTALLED BUT FORGOT TO INFORM MAINT OF THE DISCREPANCY. WE DEPARTED 1 HR LATER. WHEN THE PITOT TUBE COVERS WERE DISCOVERED ON THE PLANE; NO ONE WAS NEAR THE ACFT AT THAT TIME. THE FO CONTINUED THE WALKAROUND INTENDING TO ALERT SOMEONE TO THIS SITUATION. THIS NEVER HAPPENED AND WE ENDED UP REJECTING THE TKOF. I FEEL THAT IN THE FUTURE; IF ANYTHING LIKE THIS IS EVER FOUND; TO FIND OR CALL MAINT PERSONNEL IMMEDIATELY; STOP THE PREFLT AND TAKE CARE OF THIS SITUATION. ALERT THE CAPT RIGHT AWAY AND THEN COMPLETE THE WALKAROUND.
