Synopsis

DECATHLON INSTRUCTOR PILOT WITH STUDENT AT CONTROLS AND CLEARED TO LAHSO ELECTS TO GO AROUND; OVER FLYING A G IV ON THE INTERSECTING RWY.

Narrative

I WAS RETURNING WITH A STUDENT IN A DECATHLON. THE STUDENT HAD NO TIME IN TAILWHEEL ACFT; BUT WAS FLYING THE AIRPLANE WELL. WE PLANNED TO DO A TOUCH AND GO FOLLOWED BY A FULL STOP AND WERE TOLD TO ENTER A R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 29. THIS ARPT IS VERY BUSY AND WHILE ON FINAL FOR RWY 29 WE WERE TOLD TO GO AROUND DUE TO A JET ON FINAL BEHIND US. AT THIS POINT I TOLD MY STUDENT THAT WE WOULD JUST DO A FULL STOP LNDG. WE WERE TOLD TO ENTER L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 29 AND PRIOR TO TURNING ON BASE WERE ASKED TO DO A 360 DEGS AND REENTER DOWNWIND. I ONLY HEARD 'DO A 360;' SO WHEN WE COMPLETED THE 360 DEGS WE WERE ASKED TO DO ANOTHER 360 DEGS AND REENTER DOWNWIND. AGAIN; JUST BEFORE REACHING BASE WE WERE TOLD TO DO ANOTHER 360 DEGS DUE TO JET TFC. AT THIS POINT I WAS ANXIOUS TO GET ON THE GND TO MEET MY NEXT STUDENT; SO I INQUIRED ABOUT LNDG ON RWY 5. AFTER CONSIDERATION; THE CTLR CLRED US TO LAND AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 29. I WASN'T PREPARED TO HAVE TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 29; BUT KNEW THERE WAS ABOUT 3500 FT OF RWY BEFORE THE INTXN WITH RWY 29 AND HAD LANDED AND EXITED PRIOR TO RWY 29 MANY TIMES BEFORE; SO FELT COMFORTABLE IN ACCEPTING THIS CLRNC. WHILE APCHING THE RWY THE STUDENT WAS CONSISTENTLY LOW AND I WAS WORKING ON GETTING HIM HIGHER FOR THE APCH. BECAUSE THERE ARE NO FLT INSTS IN THE BACK OF THE DECATHLON AND BECAUSE I FELT COMFORTABLE THAT THE STUDENT WAS MAINTAINING THE AIRSPD I HAD ASKED HIM TO MAINTAIN I WAS NOT TERRIBLY CONCERNED ABOUT OUR SPD. XING THE THRESHOLD OF RWY 5 WE FLOATED FOR LONGER THAN I WANTED AND WHEN WE FINALLY DID TOUCHDOWN WE BOUNCED. IT WAS AT THIS POINT THAT I FEARED WE COULD NOT GET STOPPED PRIOR TO THE INTXN AND I ELECTED TO PERFORM A GAR. WE DID THIS AND ENDED UP OVER-FLYING THE G4 THAT WAS ON RWY 29 ROLLING OUT FROM ITS LNDG. I ESTIMATE WE OVER-FLEW THE G4 BY 500 FT. A COMBINATION OF THE DESIRE TO GET ON THE GND FOR MY NEXT STUDENT AND A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY IN MY STUDENT'S ABILITIES RESULTED IN ME MAKING SEVERAL POOR DECISIONS THAT RESULTED IN A NEAR MISS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC.
